Sewing lace overlay

Mrs. C | Posted in Teach Yourself To Sew on

Good day…

I am making a 2 piece  black velvet dress with black cotton crochet lace sleeves.  I’d like to overlay the lace with an ivory fabric.

What is a good fabric to use?  Is lining fabric appropriate?  What is the correct way to sew this?

Also….I was thinking of using these 2 fabrics as a small piping for the rounded neckline to make it cohesive….Does this sound like an appropriate detail?

Thank  you,

Syndi

Do you mean you want to put a fabric UNDER the lace?  You could use a lining fabric.  I would take a sample of the lace and the velvet to the fabric store and try out some different ones.  Depending on your lace coverage, some of the underlay will show and this will tell you how much and how appropriate it is.  I would cut them separately, hem them separately and then treat them as one fabric sewing them into the armseye.   Using lace over the fabric may be a little bulky for the piping, but you are the best judge of that.  Sounds, lovely.  Good luck with it.
