pinking loose weave fabric
I am sewing a Butterick pattern and I am using a sort of a loose weave fabric. Do I use the pinking shears on the seam material and then zig zag? I'm a bit of a novice at this so I need all kinds of help.

A serger would be ideal for finishing the seam allowances, but assuming you don't have one, look on your machine for an overlock stitch. If you handle the fabric gently so as not to fray or distort it, the overlock stitch will finish the seam allowance neatly and securely; there is no need to pink it. Another option would be a Hong Kong finish--a bit more work, but very elegant. Threads has had articles on this treatment at least a couple of times. Good luck!

A good stitch to use would be a three step zigzag. This looks like a zigzag but is actually three small stitches in each direction. I think this works better than the overlock stitches since most of them have a back and forward motion that can stretch the fabric out on the edge.
