Increasing the waist size in a skirt with side and front and back seams? (post #34991)

I recently watched a video about increasing the waist size in a skirt with front and back seams as well as side seams. The person only made ncreases at the side seams? Since there were 4 seams . . 8 cut edges . . . wouldn't you make the increases at all 4 seams?? Please advise. Simcerely, Camielle

Video correct. Alter at side (post #34991, reply #1 of 3)
Video correct. Alter at side seams, or and darts/shaping. The CB and CF would generally be left alone .

The center back and center back seams are generally on the straight of grain, so you don't want to increase there; doing so would flatten out the curve of the waistline and throw the fabric off-grain in the front and back. The side seams are usually already at an angle, and extending the waistline doesn't affect them very much.
Besides, increasing all 8 cut sides would mean that you'd be adding only 1/8" to each, which is a lot of extra work with more possibility of distortion. The video instructions are actually saving you effort and making it easier to preserve the drape of the skirt.
