Help! Thread getting caught

mallorywhite | Posted in Teach Yourself To Sew on

Hi everyone!

I inherited a 2002 Euro-Pro sewing machine, and have been trying to
teach myself how to sew. I keep running into the problem of the
thread getting caught underneath. I have taken everything apart,
cleaned it of any threads, and oiled it. I’ve noticed a pattern
when I sew, and maybe you can diagnose it. Here is a picture of
what happens, and then the thread breaks.

Are you sure about the model number?  I cannot find such a number.  You need a manual for your machine. In the meantime.

    (1) The needle is installed so the front faces toward the bobbin location. This would be toward the front or to the left, depending on the location of the shuttle/bobbin. The front of the needle has a groove that helps guide the thread as it connects with the bobbin thread. The back of the needle is flat near the top.

    (2) The bobbin thread may not be feeding in the correct direction from the bobbin spool. For a vertical bobbin assembly, this is usually clockwise. Make sure the thread is also feeding through the tension guide on the side of the bobbin case.

    (3) Be sure to use a new needle the is type appropriate for the fabric being sewn.

I agree with spicegirl's diagnose.  The first thing I thought when I looked at the picture is that the needle is dull or the wrong size.  Change to a larger size needle and see what happens.

needle bent or bobbin case loose

needle might be bent or, if your europro means its a janome, the janome I owned always had a loose bobbin holder that i have to fidgit with to get my sewing accurate.  my europro my lock is from janome so I'm guess if its the same brand name you might wanna check your bobbin  holder.  I dont own my janome anymore but I remember there is this tab on the right hand side in the bobbin case that you have to manipulate.  it acts as a gate whereby it allows you to totally take that case out of the machine.  you might have to adjust that.

Are you absolutely sure that you have the machine threaded properly.  Is the thread seated properly into the tension disks.  If the thread is breaking on a regularly spaced interval, something may be catching it as it passes through.  I once had a rough edge on the needle hole in the foot plate that cut my thread.  Is the thread going through the take up lever?  I find with my students that takng the thread completely off the machine and out of the bobbin and rethreading everything usually solves the problem - that is if you are threading everything correctly.
