full skirted dress (post #36932)

Hi I'm making a dress with a full skirt-- which means I need to gather the skirt, how can I do this and make the gathers spaced nicely so that my dress won't have that 'home made' look to it? I'm trying to match the notches of the skirt up with the notches on the bodice, but my dress still looks too full of gathers in the front? Is there a short cut, or rule on how to do this successful and make it look GOOD-- like a professional did it? Thank you, I look forward to your replies.

Clover products has a fuse and gather tape that looks like it would work much better than the old standby of basting and pulling the bobbin thread, which usually breaks during the process, or zig-zag stitching across cord/string.  You have to be sure not to catch the cord/string with the stitching.

The main ingredient for any of these processes is patience.

A ruffler foot is limited to the number of gathers to the inch (a whole lot or very little) and it may or may not work for you.

Test each method with the same fabric as the dress to see what will work best for you.

Best wishes for a successful project.

Thank you very much for the reply, I will look for this. I have a ruffler foot, as well.  I will try this out, too.

I appreciate your help.
