Threads and Needles

lizziesews | Posted in Talk With Us on

I’ve been gone for 3 weeks and now I can’t find my way around here.  Tell you where I’ve been later.  I posted a request for information on all possible needles (hand and sewing machine) and all possible threads, so that I could figure out the best ones for the project.  Naturally, I don’t expect all possibilities, but all I’ve gotten so far is a publication from Coats and Clark for just their threads.

I’ve been up in the mountains in Wyoming, in a cabin with no one closer than a mile away, just me and the dog.  We have a big table there, perfect for cutting out fabric.  This trip I was working on an ankle length vest made of my handwoven fabric.  Such fun!  Incidently, saw a coyote, fox, weasel, several deer, several moose, and a black bear….lizzie

If you are sewing on handwoven fabric, you will probably need a sharp fairly large needle, at least a 14 or maybe even a 16 or 18.  As far as the thread, if you are using something natural to weave your fabric, you may choose to use a natural thread like silk or cotton.  Just my humble opinion.

      Needles and Threads

Thank you.  I'm doing fine with the handwoven, but I also want to do some silk, fine cotton, sequin, etc.  When do I use polyester?  Silk?  Cotton?  etc.  Am also having a problem with thread for beading.  What they told me at the beading store won't go through the needle.  (Am excited to wear the handwoven one I'm working on.  It'll be rather funky.  Wish I could wear more  "funky"  but at my age I look more "Bag ladyish".)

I just use regular sewing thread (and a fine eyed needle; a beading needle if the bead holes are very small) when I bead wedding gowns.  Coats & Clark at the bridal shop; Guttermann at home.  We just C&C for all fabrics at the bridal shop (good quality polyester, silk, acetate lining) and I use Guttermann for all fabrics at home (silk; wool; linen; cotton).

        Chris
