Tension on stitch

fredjan | Posted in Talk With Us on

Can anyone help me on this problem…?  I have been sewing a blouse on rayon material..I have used a #12 needle and a #14 needle..and my bobbins tension is correct.  No matter what I do, the top thread seems to “lay” on the material…so much that after sewing a seam, one could pull the top  thread out.   It is fiesty material  or is it me??

    tension on stitch

Rayon is a fairly light fabric so I would use a 70/10 needle to better match the fabric weight, but I don't really think changing the needle  size would help that.  It sounds more like the bobbin thread is not pulling the upper thread into the fabric thus letting it lay on top.  If that is the case maybe your bobbin is not put in correctly.  Have you checked the threading of the upper thread too?  If you have been trying to "adjust" the tension yourself you may really have to go to the sewing machine Dr.

    tension correction

You need to use a smaller needle on rayon--a 9 or 11, but you also need to loosen the top tension.  Right now, it is too tight, so it lies on the top of the fabric, while the bobbin thread has to come up and over it.  Each machine is different, but your instruction manual (and most are available online) will show you how to balance the top and bottom tension.   Basically, you want to leave the bobbin tension alone and adjust only the top tension.  Try it with some samples of the same fabric you are working with.
