Hi, I am a subscriber to Threads even though I am not a sewer myself. I live in the New York
City area. I am looking to have a custom bra made. I am a standard size but I want a bra made from my organic cotton fabrics. I was encouraged by the article about bra making which appeared about ten years ago in the magazine. I would be willing to send a copy to anyone interested in this project. I have a bra which I would like copied using my materials. I would like to know if there is anyone who has bra making experience or is an experienced sewer who would be interested in following the excellent instructions given in the article. I think it would be possible to work long distance. I would appreciate if anyone has any ideas.

I just posted on another bra-thread that I love Lee-Ann Burgess' book. She clones existing bras too. I'd always heard, that the center of the bra, between the cups, should fit closely up against the chest between the breasts. The very FEW bras I have that fit this way are comfortable, supportive, and uplifting, BUT on laundry day, I notice how HUGE, and unsightly, they are! I'd say most of my bras, at least the pretty ones, probably don't fit properly at all.
This morning I looked at the website you recommended. Clicked overview. Noted how the sloper was formed, in the round, and then divided into flat pattern pieces. Wearing my cotton knit nightie, I decided to isolate one breast only, just to see what I might be dealing with.
Strong, course language, $%%^^&**(())#@!
No wonder I'm tired at night! Viewed from that angle, I'm carrying arround two packages of flour, on my chest!
On the bright side, once the flour packages are moved out of the way, I'm MUCH thinner than I thought! Gail

Glad I could help Gail. I'm a 34B with a slim frame, you may have seen my pic I posted. I still have troubles finding the proper fit. I don't have the time to try making my own. CherryP

Has anyone out there tried McCalls pattern #M5651? Cute, cute, cute, bra, pantie, cami, and slip patterns!!!!
Probably a bit more geared to the "Sweet young thing" than the "Full breasted old doll", but I thought I'd try making up a set to see what I might learn.
Went to JoAnn's especially to buy the pattern, which I'd seen in the Vogue home pattern magazine.
They did sell the pattern, but none of the lace or fabric necessary to make it up. Curses, foiled again.
I think I'll try an order from Sew Sassy and just see how it works out. Looks like fun. Gail
I just took a look at that pattern. I don't like it at all, no support. I'm flat chested but still like a well fitted bra. I sew mine from a Kwik Sew pattern because I've finally perfected the fit. (took 5 muslins) The Elan patterns look good also. You will definately have to order your supplies on line. Good luck, and be patient with those muslins. Once the band is correct, sew the cup in with large basting stitches so you wont spend all day ripping after marking another adjustment.
After doing all that, I actually think it would have been easier to sew up 1 muslin, then cut the cup out of it, leaving 1" around all the edges. Then drape a large piece of fabric over my chest and put the cupless bra on over it and adjust the fabric underneath and mark to make the perfect cup. I did it the hard way, try on, measure, mark, correct pattern, sew again, repeat.....
I think most people buy a well fitting bra from a professional lingerie shop and then copy it. That's a serious consideration for your time. A good bra will run about $35-$40 but you've got a flawless pattern instantly. Don't take it apart!!! Pin each section to your ironing board or equivelant, with a piece of paper in between, and poke a sharp pin through the seams into the paper, then clean up the lines with a french curve and add seam allowances with a compass.

The problem with bras for a well endowed woman is that they have to be engineered as much as fitted. Went on a rant once and contacted all the bra maker companies with a letter of complaint that all the bras they had in my size, 40DD were ill fitting, ugly, and didn't come in nice colours and prints like the smaller sizes. Asked them WHY? Only got ONE REPLY from Chandelle in France. They explained the process of constructing the support in the larger sizes was too expensive to construct them properly! So to keep the prices down, they sacrificed some support. Imagine a gentleman being told that about his jock strap! At least they were honest. Since then the retail companies have smartened up a bit and have been a lot better.
There was a lady with a custom fit/custom bra pattern company at a Sewing expo I went to in the fall. Anyone have any experience with one of these outfits?
Another five years and I'll be able to throw them over my shoulders and tie them in a bow behind my neck. Problem solved. Gail
