questions about "Inspired by Threads"

carobanano's picture

...because I didn't know where else to ask!

-Is it OK to write more for the description than what's given? It looks like you could only write a few sentences- which may be the point, but what if there are some things judges should know about an entry that can't be shown with pictures?

-For finalists' garments- how long do the judges keep them?

Thanks to anyone who can help me out,

Caroline

Hi, Caroline,

Sorry i didn't answer immediately--I was on a trip till today. Here are some answers:

1. Yes, you can write as much as you want, and you can send several photos. Often, the judges learn a lot about a garment by understanding the process. You can include fabric swatches as well, if you wish. As you say, sometimes it's hard to show details in a photo, esp. if there's tone-on-tone embellishment, fancy lining, etc.

2. I can't remember how long the garments stay in house. The judging is usually scheduled for a day or two after the deadline for the finalist garments to arrive here. After the judging, the editors have a chance to spend some time with the garments so we can write up copy for the web and magazine articles that feature the finalists and winners, and to take notes for commentary at the fashion show at Novi. We also spend a day or two photographing all the pieces. Then, if I'm  not mistaken, the garments are sent directly to Novi. There, the staff pulls the fashion show together, assessing the sizes of the garments, booking models, etc., for any garments that won't be modelled by the maker. So I believe the garments are unavailable until the Novi show is over, which will be October 3d this year. If someone submits, say, a wedding gown that still needs to go to the wedding, I imagine we could work something out to accomodate that!

Thanks for the info, Carol! What's the deadline for garments to reach the Threads offices? I'm just trying to figure out when to schedule my senior pictures, since I wanted to wear my entry for one of the shots. The chance is slim that I'll be a finalist, but there's a chance nonetheless!

Our challenge organizer says we'd need finalist garments in the office by August 5th. Gosh, that's coming right up, isn't it? I'm looking forward to this--it's great fun to see what everyone's sewing out there.

Good luck Caro!  If I recall correctly you're a young sewer - weren't you sewing your prom dress recently? (If I recall incorrectly...well apologies and good luck anyway!  Must be lack of coffee, can't be that short term memory thing...;-)   I didn't get entered, needed more materials that got in too late but I'd love to see new/young sewers winning and/or getting their friends excited about the art!
