Please fix the Recent Discussions menu!

SAAM | Posted in Talk With Us on

Dear Thread People,

Please, please, please fix the Recent Discussions menu on the Gatherings site. The fact that it is all closed up, and that it closes again as soon as you navigate to a topic, means it is really cumbersome to find topics, and next to impossible to keep track of what you’ve already read.

Please find a way to make this similar to what we had before, where the topics were out in the open, and were highlighted differently once they’d been selected.

Under the current system, all the hunting makes visiting Gatherings a chore rather than the joy it used to be.

Dear Sherry ~ I totally agree, but I've done some research on this new platform (Drupal), and it seems to be a major "work-in-progress".

Your issue with the self-closing Discussions list, and the related need for "endless scrolling" are, as best I can tell, currently "unfixable" because of the underlying architecture.  I must admit, though, that I am way-far-from-fluent in developer-geek-speak, so I may be missing the point entirely. I do know that there seem to be quite a few *real* developers working on a number of parts that both users (us) and admin folx (Vicky et al, at Taunton) have brought to their attention.

BTW ~ I just now discovered that "where you were in the Discussions list" is solved by looking at your browser's "page" line (I know that's not the right name for it, either - the line at the very top of the page that always starts with http://... ) This page is shown as

    http://forums.threadsmagazine.com/gatherings/talk-us/please-fix-recent-discussions-menu

and the answer to "Where was I??" is always right after /gatherings/.  I start at the top and go down in order, to make it easier to keep track of, anyway.

And... the title of the thread you're in follows the next slash:

Have a great weekend, and please don't give up on us!

      OOOOOH!

Thanks Kharmin, for pointing that out.  I almost never look at that line on my browser, and end up scrolling all the way up to the top of the page to find the information about how I got where I am.  This will be a great time-saver.

This is the kind of tip that is so helpful, and it would be lovely if there were an easily located place it and other such useful tips about navigating this system could be posted, accessible forever, without being lost.

        Category+Thread Name in BrowserIDLine...

Yeah, Joan ~ I was really excited to find it, myself!

In some forums I've seen, those sort of tips are called "Easter Eggs", and are disignated as "Stickies" or some such title. I agree, a (highly moderated or edited) collection in one place would be a "good thing", but I doubt there's much room on Vicky's plate for yet another task!!

Happy Sunday - hope it's not raining on your parade, today!

Thanks for this info, Kharmin. I'm still hoping the people responsible for the site will be able to iron out the kinks. In the meantime, your suggestions will be very helpful.
