New to Sewing ^-^

SinfulMoon | Posted in Talk With Us on

Hello

I’m new to sewing though I’ve dabbled in it (my sister is the seamstress, she just has a life and can’t teach me), I haven’t made anything with a sewing Machine because I’m a little too scared of it right now, I can somewhat hand sew. That’s all going to Change though, I’ve been looking for a decent site to help me out, it seems like it’s so easy to do, but I know it’s going too be rough, Like all art anyways Working for it beauty ^-^

Right now Im more interested in learning alterations on already made clothing before I move onto making my own. I’ve lost quite a bit of inches off of everywhere on my body and I just love the clothing I had! So I would really love to learn how to make them look good again.

Thanks and good sewing :3

I think knowing some basic, simple alterations is a really good thing to know.  I was explaining to someone yesterday, that it is amazing what a few simple darts in a ready made top, can make. Or changing a hemline, sleeve length, etc..  Having gone down a few sizes from losing weight and then altering some of my old clothes,  I would not reccommend spending much time altering your old clothes if you've gone down very many sizes.  You won't be happy. One or two sizes..yes.  The reason my most flattering size 14s looked good was that the STYLE and cut of the garment  hid my weight.  If you want to show off a new size 10 shape you will want a different style, not a smaller version of the same style that hid/flattered your previous weight, because it will continue to hide your shape and you'll look about the same as you did before you lost the weight.

Don't be afraid of your sewing machine.  It can be your best friend!  Buy a little fabric, put it under the presser foot and test drive the machine, playing with the tensions and different stitch settings.  Then sew a few simple projects.

As for alterations, it is fairly simple to teach yourself.  There is a great book out there, "Altering Women's Ready to Wear" by Mary Roehr, that will take you step by step through the most common alterations.
