In 2006, I bought a leather jacket in Argentina that had magnets placed between the outside leather and the folded over facing so that they served as closures in place of buttons. A neat idea, I thought. Since then, the magnets on one side have come detatched, and I need advice on how to replace them without defacing the leather or taking the entire jacket apart. I retrieved the magnets, which are 3/4″ diameter disks about 1/16″ deep. It appears that they were encased in a small lining-fabric square and then stitched into the front edge seam of the coat, from which they pulled loose. Would appreciate advice on the best way to replace the magnets–glue, restitch, whatever, short of giving up and making button holes.

is it possible for you to open the facing along the hem line ? If you really don't want to open up the front of the garment, measure carefully and glue the magnets to a length of grosgrain ribbon the width of the facing itself so it will lay in there flat - feed the ribbon with the magnets secured to iit up thru the facing (use a wire ?) Once the magnet strip is in place and attached at the top ... here you might have to do some obscured stitching, close the hem back up. Interesting challenge without opening up the facing ;-)
