July ’05 Issue

HC | Posted in Talk With Us on

My July ’05 issue just arrived—Wow! The colors are luscious and the articles look terrific. The “invisible zipper” article arrived just in the nick of time. Thank you—clearly you are listening to us and trying to make some positive changes.

The cover color alone is worth the price of the magazine.

Definitely loved that color cover.  It's so bright and eye-catching.  And loved the scarf as well.

I was disappointed that the new issue arrived without the standard jacket cover.  The corners of my magazine were in bad shape and I hate the big ugly mailing label on the front cover not to mention missing the tips and techniques that were usually on the jacket.  I would like the Threads' jacket back please!

Ditto. Threads is something I keep forever, and this issue is in throwaway condition.

Please bring the cover back!  My issue was ragged too.  And such a beautiful cover to have arrive ragged.  :(

          ITA.  Please keep the cover.

I have to say that I was disappointed in this issue and almost tossed it immediately. I hated the cover and think the rippled scarf is one of the ugliest projects I've seen in Threads - and that's saying something considering how ghastly the last Threads Challenge was. I wonder how long it's going to take the new editor to catch up with all the suggestions and e-mails and reflect our concerns in Threads, if he ever does. I sent an e-mail and never got an answer. Personally, I think the editorial board made a decision on which direction it wanted the magazine to go and hired an editor to see that mission through irregardless of what subscribers want. And what's with ditching the cover? Was that not supposed to be a perk for subscribers?

            Bernie,
I'm glad to see someone else who was dissapointed AGAIN with Threads, it just seemed so funny after the previous issue where everyone was bashing the magazine that this one got such a rave review, I recently got ahold of an issue from 1986, OMG what a difference, there was so much real information in the articles, that issue had "meat" while this one is just a very scanty appetizer! that leaves a taste of lacking in the mouth. All the articles were only half finished, its all pictures and no words

I hardly expect any of the critcism will generate a better publication. I've gotten cynical considering the condescending way the new editor responded to customer complaints and I told him so, but of course he hasn't responded. I want depth in articles with lots of good instruction and detail, and Threads has been more like a sewer's textbook in the past. Now it's more like fast food for sewists - well, maybe not quite but it's heading there.

I totally agree.  Where is the old Threads?

          Ditto...please bring the cover back!

My copy had a cover! it was in the usual plastic envelope, but then I am in the UK.I once received a copy without an envelope, in poor condition and wet. I emailed threads and another copy was sent, properly, and they promised not to do it again.I can't think of a use for the ripply thing, but I found the rest of the issue very interesting and have already done a sample of the hairline seam.Cheers,Ghillie

I've been getting Threads since about issue #4, and while this issue isn't up to the standards of those marvelous, old, esoteric issues of yore, I think this was a pretty good one. The articles on fine seams, applying a pocket, and best current patterns are very nice. And I think the ripply scarf is just lovely. I will be making several of those for Christmas for the more adventurous of my relatives.

I agree with you, Elona, that this issue was an improvement.  Let's just hope the trend towards better will last!

I'm well aware of the turn around time it takes to do something, but we have been complaining about it for about 6 months now

IIRC, it has actually been more than a year since the editors of Threads began asking for our opinions regarding the direction of the magazine. Unfortunately, I haven't seen much in the way of change that encourages me.

        Hi Sandy

I came across a letter written to me by Threads on April 15, 1996 and "a small sampling of other people who subscribe to THREADS......so we can improve the magazine for you and for other readers with your interests......your answers are very important to us, no matter what your opinion is of the magazine... ".  I completed the survey and returned it to the independent research firm as requested; I wrote to the publisher at the time, as well as the editor.  I received no reply from either of them.  The magazine continued to decline.  Nine years is quite a long time to be ignored!

The Australian couture and tailoring magazines are fabulous and well worth the money. Anyone need more info?

          1. katina | | #19

            Yes, please!

Here is a link where you can view some of the special editions that Australian Stitches magazine has put out. Although they're all sold out on this site, searches might find copies for you.  The magazine is called Australian Stitches, and there are a bunch of them in the group (heirloom, embroidery, quilting, etc.).

            Many thanks for the info.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I like the issue....

Re: the Australian Stitches magazine - I was stunned to find it at Joann's!  I only saw it at the ETC store, but will put those 50% off coupons to good use on these magazines!Karen
