   hemming a squin dress

   I'm sure that others can give you a lot better help, but I remember one thing that created a problem for someone.  When she cut off sequined or beaded fabric, it  reduced  the weight/tension at the bottom of the garment enough that the garment  pulled upward and the resulting  hemline was  shorter than marked and wanted.   So, don't cut anything until you get some response from others.

   Hi Minnie!

   To help answer your question, and in light of Ralphetta's note ~ How much shorter (more or less) does it need to be? Are you looking to change it by several inches or just a little bit?

   And what is the general shape of the skirt ~ Is there a lot of flare, or gathers, or is it pretty much straight, with minimal difference between the width at top and bottom of the hem?

   Also, check out how the sequins are attached - if by a chain stitch that you would cut across, you should probably tack down the newly-lowest ones, so that they don't develop a "run" and start to fall off!

   "Ahhh, one more thing..." (to quote the Ancient, or Detective Columbo) Is it ready-to-wear or hand-made? Might make a difference ...

   sequin dress

   The dress in question is a straight dress and needs to be shortened 3 inches.

   How is the original hem put in?

   Check to see how the manufacturer secured the sequins when it was originally hemmed. This may give you a clue as to whether or not you need to secure them before cutting. Some hems are just the fabric, not beaded or sequinned in the hem allowance. If that's the case, I wouldn't worry too much about the weight, but if there are sequins in the hem allowance, then weight may be an issue. Great point, previously mentioned.

   On weird stuff like that, I usually take a few digital pictures, so I can remember what the original looked like. If you have a macro setting on your camera (close up), try that too. Let us know.
