Golf Shirt placket and collar

waves_gulls | Posted in Talk With Us on

I’m looking for easy, fast directions for making the neck placket and collar attachment for golf shirts. Want them to look professional, no facings. This would be a good article for Threads. The collars of retail shirts are attached with dyed to match twill tape at the neck.  Is there a substitute, or can colored twill tape be purchased?

I have the equivalent of a book store full of sewing books, but have not been able to find these directions.  I also have almost a whole collection of Threads – my FAVORITE sewing magazine by far!

June, Thank you for the suggestion. Meanwhile, take a look at Kwik Sew patterns (http://www.kwiksew.com). They tend to have directions that yield a very RTW-looking result, and are simple to follow. I haven't used a golf-shirt pattern from them myself, so I don't know how they construct those.

As for dyed-to-match twill tape, good luck! It's hard enough to find a nice 100% cotton twill tape, let alone in colors. I notice that many shirts use a contrasting color in the twill tape, since it doesn't really show when the shirt if worn. You might consider dying some a couple of colors and using the closest match, or just stick with white or black. Let me look into where you could get at least basic twill tape--probably one of the NYC retailers with a website.

Carol, Thanks so much for your note. Yes, finding the twill tape is a problem. I noticed recently in a golf shop shirts with neck trim looking like embroidered or printed ribbon. Hmmmm - that would be a creative alternative I guess.

I have made the golf shirt Kwik Sew 2763 for my husband. I used a silkweight wicking fabric, very light and drapy, and was worried that the facing (there is a facing) would look cheesy, but in fact, it came out terrific. You cannot tell by looking at this shirt that it's not a placket.

However, you might want to look at Kwik Sew 2185, a rugby shirt with an applied placket. I have not made this one, but it may be more in line with what you're seeking.

Thesee patterns are viewable in Kwik Sew's online catalogue.

Good idea, I will check out Kwik Sew and take a look at both patterns. I use computer patterns and custom measurements almost exclusively and actually forgot to check out the pattern dept. :-(

Your silkweight - was it powerdry by any chance? I have used some for myself and have some more coming this week. Your experience tempts me to try it for a (men's)golf shirt as it would be perfect for the climate here in FL.  I wondered if it would be heavy enough. If you used powerdry, it must be fine. Thanks for the reply.

It is silkweight Capilene, from Outdoor Wilderness Fabrics Inc., as I recall. The fabric is EXTREMELY lightweight; I mean, this stuff ripples in the breeze! DH is a hiker and outdoorsman, and is always, always overheated, so it's just what he wanted. To work with this fabric, I did a lot of testing beforehand: Gutermann poly thread, a fine stretch needle, Sof-Knit "cool fuse" fusible interfacing, and buttonholes--very, very tricky on the placket--with Tearaway Interfacing on the bottom and that plastic Space Tape on top for a pucker-free result.I ignored the pattern's big, U-shaped back neck facing and just bound the neck edge with a strip of self-fabric, and I used self-fabric for the collar, rather than ribbing. DH wants things that dry fast when he's hiking in the back country. For the double-needle hem finish, I found that Wooly Nylon, hand--wound onto the bobbin--worked best.

What a wealth of info! I am not familiar with silkweight Capilene. If anything, it sounds like maybe even lighter than powerdry. So I think it is safe for me to try a golf shirt with powerdry, at least a test.

I will use your tricks, thanks for saving me time. The only thing I am not familiar with is Space Tape so I'll look around for it.

If you cannot find Space Tape locally, try online stores like Nancy's Notions or Clotilde. Or just google something like "buttonhole Space Tape."Happy Golf shirt sewing!

Thanks, I'm sure I'll find the Space Tape in one of those places.

GREAT!  Haven't read it all yet but looks like a terrific link you sent. I did a search previously but this one did not come up.

Thanks so much! I really appreciate it!!!!

This is my first time on this list - terrific responses and fast. I am impressed!

jcappola:  I just recieved an e-mail from jkm trims this morning and they have colored twill tape, too!  It is the first time I have seen it offered in colors.

Mimi I just looked at the site that you posted and all it had was costume jewelry and no amount of navigating allowed me to find ribbons or other trims.  Did you copy the site address or did you type it into your message?

      1. mimi | | #16

I have one of the invoices right hear and it says http://www.mjtrim.com.  Make sure you don't put an "s" on the trim, you will go to a strange site.  I will try it now and see.

Thank you that looks much better.  I have already added the site to my favorites.  I previously just hit the web page as it had been typed into the post.

Terry:  Up in the right hand corner of the page there are two buttons:  rhinestones and ribbons.  Click on the ribbons button.  It will take you to the ribbon site and they do have twill tape.  The style #  is 00458 for the 1/2 inch tape and is $0.59 a yard.

I have an old Stretch & Sew book called Necklines Made Easy which provides directions for a number of rugby neckline styles with and without tape and ribbing.  I recommend the book.

Thank you, I'll see if I can find a copy on the internet.
