I have a question,
I have been here for awhile and I just shared a bit of this world with my 10 year old daughter whom is enjoying learning to sew.
And she wanted to join the forum. But I didn’t know if you had any plans to get a kids gatherings up and running? Where they could chat with their piers about projects and sewing and such!! She seemed really interested. Or do you know of any forums as such..
I have to preface it with I am at this point not going there with my space with my child..I know MIY has a thing with my space. She is only 10 and I believe this is safe for me!! So I am hoping I am making sense of what I want to ask and say.
Thanks for your listening ear and any advice for the younger crowd like my daughter to be a part of her learning experience to sewing

I am not sure I came in at the right time of the conversation but I will go with this and if I am off base I apologize. There is a progam called Sew Trendy that are supported thru local venues and Simplicity Pattern Company. You can look them up on the web at http://www.SewTrendy.com perhaps they can refer you to a place accomodating to the younger generation. They are supported thru local venues and Simplicity Pattern Co. I know there are other avenues and organizations online for teens interested in sewing. Some have change. I usally go the the HomeSewingAssociation.org . I am not sure where you are located. I am in Boise, Idaho and I have a studio where I teach sewing to children. Or they can come in and rent the space/machine for a certain dollar amount and get connected with the local sewing community. I know of a few places similar to mine. One being in Fairfield, Conn. and one being in San Franscisco. I am always supportative and love to share my excitement and industry experience as a designer to the young and upcoming future enthusiast!

I think it would be great if this forum had a section for the young sewers! My grandkids would love it. My grand daughter likes http://www.sewtrendy.com, it is geared for children and has a nice variety. Mary
Thanks Catzu aka PaulaYes I am aware of sewtrendy, and I too am trying to set up a sewing program for the younger kids..I know sew trendy is more geared up toward High School age..I am looking from starting out 8 years or so. so a bit younger even.I didn't see any forum like this one there. On the computer aspect of it.I feel it would be super beneficial for my daughter and others since they love the computer and chit chatting to have Threads sponsor a kid friendly sewing gatherings. I know MIY has one on My Space and I didn't make my point very well to Amber but I think she got it...I do not want my child at 10 associated at this point in her life with that forum.So I haven't even gone there to check it out I don't even have a need to register myself there!! I know It is what you make of it and as she gets older I will put monitoring into play however Not at 10. And the sewingorganiztion I go there too they have patterns and such for kids but not a chit chat posting place like what we have here...I know they would find this fun and inspiring!! I have just read your question, and I think is is an excellent one.
I hear you when you say you wouldn't want your girl on myspace.
Here is safe, here is wonderful, here they will learn.
The forum is setup in a way that they will understand how to post and reply. No Gimmicks.
If Amber could connect 'us' to the kids site 'we' could help the girls/boys with their questions and share in their projects...What do you think? Or are you leaning towards kids only site.
Either way I agree with you, and would like to see this happen in the future.

What a wonderful Idea! Yeah I was thinking of possibly being able to chime in!! Could you imagine all of us every once in a while being able to help!! I am loving it.You said everything I was thinking about in this forum in such wonderful words!!The last few posts have might of been a bit foggy as my head is foggy now I am getting what my girls have at this point!! I think we could start a little corner for them here in GATHER for a CHAT or GENERAL; just title it KIDS STUFF or something like that. Rather like the kids playing in the next room; they can do their own thing, but we still have an inkling that they are not getting into trouble. Who knows, they might just listen in on our 'wisdom' and learn something!

The grandkids are not allowed on that site. Even teens and adults have made the mistake of giving out personal info and meeting predators online!
We have security blocks and still go in and check everywhere the kids have been online so no sneaking even for curiosity sake. The kids are more computer savy than we are these days, so it is vital for thier safety and innocence that we protect them.
There are sites like Disney, etc that are set up in appropriate ways for kids to enjoy and interact. HOpe to find more of them, a sewing forum would be great!
It really is shocking and scary how many sites are insecure.
Which is why a special section on this forum would be perfect as suggested in post #10. and the way blondie2sew and I were thinking.
My 5yr old is using computers without internet at school, and he knows his way around disney etc, under my watchful eye.
I too have 'blocks' on my pc and his desktop. but still need to be very careul. spell a word incorrectly on google and you are in all sorts of trouble.
I agree with you , protect, guide and be there for them.
