This is my first post and I have a small problem I would like your advice on.
I have been making a dress for a special occasion, I have been using a dressmakers model (new to me) it fitted the model perfectly (if a little fitted) and I was excited to try it on..
However, I did my first FBA at the pattern stage, which I hoped would make the dress fit better. I have tried the dress on and it is very loose from top bust to shoulder is this because of the FBA? My only thought is to add shoulder pads to see if this takes up the surplus? Is that a good idea?

First Fitting
The dress form is probably a little bigger than you are in the shoulder area. You could try the dress on with shoulder pads slid in place, or temporarily tacked in place and see how it looks in the mirror. If you like the look and it makes the dress fit right then you have an easy solution. If not then since this is just your first fitting you should be able to take some of the fullness out by adjusting the shoulder seam. Hopefully you have not sewn on sleeves or finished the neck area yet. It will depend on the style of the dress too, as to whether shoulder pads look right, or how challenging it will be to fit it from this stage.

I found some tailors shoulder pads in my local haba-dash store which sit both on top of the shoulder and mould around the shoulder.
You are quite right the model and I are slightly different in the shoulder area, I must remember that for future projects.
I havent sewn the sleeve yet, so I will be able to push them in between the dress and lining. Phew! it would have been such a shame to fail at the last hurdle.
All that is left is adding the buttons to the back and making the hand sewn loops.
