Faux Fur

gwoman | Posted in Talk With Us on

This is a very interesting topic.  Thanks to those who started and contributed to it.  I’d personally want to know how to sew with those “real looking” faux furs.  I believe Donna Salyers was at one time a source for the information, her her site now appears to offer only the finished product.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I would be interested in this also. I just purchased a glorious piece of fake silver fox and want to make a hat with it.

I loved the faux fur articles.  I made a pink faux fur coat last winter and the advice on working with faux fur was very helpful.  I also made a faux shearling coat.

Hi rodezzy, I bet your fur coat looks great. Do you still have it. Can you post a pic? I made my son a costume with fur, i posted in the gallery a while back. no problems with sewing the outfit at all.

It's the pink faux fur coat in the Discussions/Photo Gallery pic #mvc-013.

It was hard work because the fabric is embroidered faux suede backed.  I loved wearing it, but it's so warm to wear I had to wait until it was several degrees below zero for me to wear it.  Between hot flashes and hot because I'm big, I couldn't wear it much (giggle).  But I turned heads and got smiles.

Faux furs have a nap, so use a with-nap layout when cutting. Cut pattern pieces one at a time on a single thickness, pile side down, using pattern weights or pinning sparingly.

Mark notches, dots or other construction details on the fabric backing with a fabric marker. Cut with sharp shears, snipping through the backing only, not through the pile. Leave as much pile as possible to help hide seamlines. Vacuum any loose fibers as you go.

Smooth the pile away from the seams and carefully pin. Alternating the pins on the upper and lower layers (Figure 1) will keep the pins from distorting the seams. Stitch with the nap, using a roller or even-feed foot to prevent the layers from shifting as you sew.

You may also want to wear a mask when cutting and sewing the fake fur. The stuff can get EVERY WHERE and up inside you nose is not a good place for it - since I also wear contact lenses I wear a face mask with eye shield when doing this. After sewing the seam, from the right side of the fur, use something like an awl to pull the hairs out of the seam, then from the back you trip close to the backing the hair out of the seam allowance - this gives you a flatter less bulky seam.

Wonderful advice Hearfire2, I should have added the fur goes everywhere. I used it on my hubby's wedding outfit (edging on Velvet cape)and my dressmakers used it on the necklines and cuffs for my bridesmaids velvet dresses. The garments turned out beautifully. I hope to put up some photos of these and other items i have made in the appropriate photo thread before i leave sydney next week for my christmas holiday.

      Regards,
