What is the best size for squares?

maricella's picture

I don't quilt, but I sew a lot for my grandchildren and would like to make a memory quilt someday.  What size should I cut the squares  from the left over fabric?  Is there a standard size.  I plan to start with pillowcases.  Thank you.

The size of the scraps will determine the size of the squares. A nice size for a one-patch quilt (lots of patches that stand alone as opposed to being sewn into a block pattern) is 4" x 4" blocks. So, you'd cut your squares at 4 1/2" x 4 1/2", to include the 1/4" seam allowance on all sides. Really there's no right or wrong size for a one-patch, though. The main thing is to cut all your blocks the same size, whatever that happens to be.

Another thought in cutting quilt squares - buy a template sheet.  Joann has them in the quilting section.  The heavier the better.

Make yourself an appropriate sized square from it.  A safety knife works well for cutting the template.  This the knife that has a retractable blade.  Several comaonies make them.  The following URl has a photo.

Be sure you use a T-square ruler in the tamplate cutting to get straight lines.  This one is 24".  I recently bought a 12" for $2 + at  A. C. Moore.

Use a rotary cutter when you cut the piece.  This wokrs the better than scissors.  MO of course.
