Queen size Bedskirt

kats4healing | Posted in Quilting and Home Decor on
Hi, I am a beginner sewer and I would like to sew a queen size bed skirt for my bed.  Can anyone suggest a book or a pattern that can help me sew one?

Thanks Michelle

You don't really need one, but I am sure there are one or two in the Singer Books series that would help.

Here are the basic methods I have used in the past:

All you really need to do is measure the length of the two sides and the width of the bottom of the bed (a+a+b=amount of fabric needed).

If you want the bed skirt to be really ruffled buy three times the amount you measured:  3(a+a+b)=afn.  Make a casing and insert enough elastic to hold the skirt onto the bed.  Measure the distance between the mattress bottom and the floor and add two inches for a hem.  Hem the bottom.

If you want something tailored buy the exact amount you measured plus about six inches.  Hem at the corners of the bed and the bottom.  In this case elastic in a casing won't work and you will need to attach the bed skirt to a flat piece of fabric, which will lay between the box spring and the mattress.

I hope this helps!  If you need more info, let me know what kind of bed skirt you are trying to make.

I like Sew in a Weekend "Slipcovers & Beding" by Better Way books.  There are any number of ways to sew bedskirts.  Check out your local library's sewing section.  I like to read several book on how to make something then pick the one that makes the most sense to me.  There are also a lot of patterns at your local fabric store that will walk you thru the process.  Good luck.

You are right my local library should have some sewing books that I can review. I will make a trip to my library and see what they have.  Thanks again for replying.

I have made bed skirts and found it to be very handy to put a fitted bottom sheet on the bed, draw in the seam line and attach my new bed skirt to the fitted sheet, I have made both tailored dust ruffles and gathered ones using the same method, plus it recycles a fitted sheet you may not have been using anymore.

Yes, the Singer series shows using fitted bed sheets.  Beware sometimes fitted bed sheet do not fit the box spring if it is one of those deep box spring beds.

For an easy to remove bed skirt, so you don't have to take off the mattress you can try this..

Use the fitted bed sheet... stitch the hard side of  Velcro onto the sheet.

Make the skirt of the bed skirt, instead of stitching it to the sheet, titch the female side of the Velcro to the band of the skirt.

Now the skirt of the bed skirt can be attached with Velcro, and removed easily to be cleaned...

We do this for our seniors who can't move the mattress and don't want help.

            always

Thank you.  I am going to use the velcro - what an excellent idea.

Any time I can share our tricks.... isn't that what these forums are about?

Let me know how it all works out?

Thank you. mimi.  I am trying to make a taylored bedskirt.  I was unsure of the measuring and your advice solved that.  thanks again.
