Hi everybody,
I have been a quilter for about 25 years. I took my first quilting class when I was pregnant with my 2nd daughter (I kept falling asleep in the class!). With raising 4 children, working, and now going back to school, I having gotten 25 years of quilting done. I have collected 25 years of fabric and quilting gadgets though. I’d like to get into making art quilts and wearable art clothing. I’d be happy to talk to anyone doing any kind of quilting though.

Hi. It is nice to hear from a fellow quilter. I find that most discussions on this forum are on apparrel. I also have been quilting  for approximately 30 years. I made my first quilt in high school, fell in love with the craft and been quilting since. I prefer hand applique but will tackle a patchwork pattern once in awhile. Right now I am working on 3 quilts. Talk about taking on too much. Anyway, 2 of them are "mystery quilts" my guild put on and they are almost done. This is the first time I participated in a mystery quilt program and it was a lot of fun. The tops are now done and this weekend I am planning to machine quilt one of them (stitch in the ditch). The 3rd quilt I have been working on for a loooong time. The pattern is Grandmas Country Album II by Robert Callaham. The McCalls Quilting magazine featured it a couple of years ago. They published a couple of blocks each issue so it took a year to applique and piece, then I put it away for awhile, then I added to it, then I put it away for awhile again, and now it is on my quilting frame. Who knows when it will get done.

I also have been dabbling in creating my own designs. So far I created a couple of wall hangings and I have an idea for a full size quilt.

Because most of my quilting projects take a long time to complete I sew apparrel for a 'quick' project, but i don't think I would like to get into wearable art clothing but I love other peoples work so I hope you post some pictures.

Kayla Kennington fiber artist and designer, Bonnie Lyn McCaffery, Ellen Anne Eddy, Park Bench Pattern Co.'s Mary Lou Rankin, Folkwear Patterns, Revisions by Dian Erickson, Wildly Wonderful Wearables (quilts, fabrics, clothing), Quilting Arts Magazine, Equilter.com., Make it Southwest Style, are some of my favorite resources for art to wear.  This year I want to learn all about thread painting which is like free motion quilting but without the layers so clothing can drape.  I love Rayon fabric for summer.

I suggest you check out these websites which is where I learn and purchase lots of goodies.  Also if you go to Bernina's website you can see the unique clothing made by designers for thier yearly fashion show.  I have Viking Machines but Berninas website is so great.  Also if you serge, you might like Serger Secrets book and the website Linda Lee Originals Home of the Happy Serger, she has patterns, books, info on clothes and quilting with the serger.  She is one of the co authors of "Serger Secrets too.

Hope you have lots of fun being a "fiber artist".  I consider myself a novice and love the learning process.  I am a grandma of 3 and mom of 2, retired from Nursing so have lots of time to play.  I draw clothing in a sketchbook and have started a journal with new ideas.  My imagination has run amuk, if only I had a seamstress pal nearby who liked the "sewing and completing projects part" !  I have several UFO's because I am more a process person than Product unfortunately.

    Mary

Hi, in your message to 'seaside sallie' you mentioned  Make it Southwest Style as one of your favorite resources. Is this a book, website or ?? I love making garments with a southwest flavor, so anything that mentions this catches my interest.

SWDecoratives.com is the website for make it southwest style, sorry, I got caught up in the moment I guess.

My most recent fabric purchase from them was some orange and yellow fabric that is dyed kind of like a sunrise or sunset with dark cactus that appear to be in shadow.  I plan to make a pillow, wallhanging, or vest with it.  Maybe machine embroider cactus in the foreground.   they also have quilt blocks of the month, quilt patterns, buttons, crafts, etc.  A small website that doesn't take all night to check out,  but very neat stuff I think.  Mary

I'm familiar with SW Decoratives, I've viewed the website several times. In the past I've received catalogs from them too, way back before computers and the Internet. A couple of years ago I saw  the fabric you mentioned made up into a wall-hanging in one of the quilt stores in Edmonton, but when I asked for the fabric I was told it was no longer available. I think Keepsake Quilting has it in their catalog. I would like to know what you decide to make with this fabric, and maybe see a photo.

Thanks for the resource info. I bought some Park Bench patterns, and got some Folkwear patterns very cheap at a yard sale, but I haven't gotten around to using them yet. I've had some ideas for humor themed vests, which I plan to make.
