International Quilt Show Fun

rodezzy2's picture

Took an all day class at the International Quilt Show in Rosemont, IL on Friday 4-17-09 with Maggie Weiss "Sheer Bliss" and it was great fun.  Attended the Bernina Fashion Show Luncheon - fantastic - pricesless fun......back to class.

Learned to fuse silks and sheers to make a wall hanging.  1st picture is Maggie Weiss and one of her works.  2nd picture are the fruit of our labor.  Mine is the first one in the top row.

After the class, I cruised the quilt show a little, and cruised the vendors a lot!  giggle.

Bought 2 doll patterns from Magic Threads (Julie McCullough), African Queen a stump doll and Razzle Dazzle a doll jointed with macrame beads.  Purchased 2 skeins of recycled sari silk spun into yarn, and from Joy's Fabrics & Quilts I got a tie dyed t-shirt and a bundle of 12 hand dyed fat quarters in joyous rainbow colors.  It was fun, and I enjoyed the whole day.

Oooooooooweeeeeeeee!  Wish I could've shared this day with you!  It sounds so delightful!  The Bernina fashion show luncheon must have been so inspirational.  Can't wait to see your next dolls come to life!

What did you use to fuse the silk?  Mistyfuse or ?  Thanks for sharing the photos.  Mary

I wish you could have been there too.  It would have been fun to have the table filled with you ladies at the show.  I'm going to try and scan the pictures of the garments modeled in the show from the book tomorrow at work and email them to myself, save them and show you guys.

Maggie Weiss used Wonder Under.  It worked great.  But there was concern that it was not as available as it has been.  She voiced that concern also.

I'll look for that Wonder Under, thanks for the tip!

I noticed yours has alot of depth and feels as if there is movement too.  Your artistry always shows through!

I have a book, Fantasy Fabrics, by Bonnie Lynne McCaffery that reminds me of the techniques you describe.  I can't wait to check out info about Maggie Weiss and read about her techniques!  Thanks for sharing your experience!  Mary

Her web site is www.maggieweiss.com and thats why I took the class to learn how to put images on other fabric that gave it depth and/or shadows, and/or floating images.  It was truly fun.  I'll look up McCaffery's site to see if it is a similiar technique.  JoAnn fabrics sells Wonder Under and I search the internet today for it.  It's available.

Even if you did not tell me, I could have picked out yours by the joyous use of colour Rodezzy! Nice! Sounds like you had a great time. Cannot wait to see what your creative impulse gives us from this. Cathy

Thanks Cathy, Maggie said my pieced looked "like a party."  I blushed.  It was just a small touch of color.  It was fun to do.

I think Maggie was exactly right, it does look like a party. :) Cathy

Thanks dear.  And if you go to her site, www.maggieweiss.com you will see the other quilt she brought to class.  It has an orange background mostly.  It has the leaves on it too.

Here are some better close ups, I had the camera on the wrong setting.  They are a little better.  The blue is lame', the hint of green sparkle is Angelina Fibers.

The pics are fantastic "rodezzy", it looks like a lot of work went into the project.  Blues and browns are my favorite color combination.  I really liked the sample on the bottom left in the first picture.  That person seems to like order and simplicity.   It's amazing how different everyone's work is and yet so much the same.  That Maggie must be a real Talent!  I'm glad you like that kind of thing.  Many of my friends are artistic and enjoy being creative but I get all strung out if I have to come up with a creative thought and do not find it fun so am happy that others do.  It is fun to look at.

Maggie just kept saying the same thing, "just look how different everyone's projects are with all the same materials, just great!"  She was fun and spontaneous.  She was very helpful and informative.  I loved the class.  Yes, that one was very pretty.  I liked it too.  I like also liked how she echo quilted the shapes within the piece.  Such fun.

You shined through!  And that's the fantastic thing about your work!  There's always a little wink of humor and happiness in what I've seen of your work.  Thanks for for sharing.
