   Hi, I got my sewing machine for Christmas, and I started with skirts--just making one after another until it felt comfortable. Then I made a few purses (here), and now I'm on dress practice. I'm really enjoying it! Thanks for the props!

   Cute purses, I especially like the dark one with the applique.  I can see you are having alot of fun creating interesting items!  Alot of thought goes into your work to make them unique!  That's what I love most about sewing!  Mary

   Wow - you're coming along by leaps & bounds!  Good for you!  You'll be making coats by winter-time!  The purses are excellent, as is the dress.  Keep posting your projects so that we can see your progress.  Happy sewing!  (The sewing machine must have been your absolute best Christmas gift, eh?).

   Organza makes a lovely applique, especially when several colors are layered. Depending on size, etc, it is sometimes easier to use a multiple layer and stitch a tiny seam all around leaving just enough opening to turn the applique piece so that all the edges are enclosed before stitching it to the base. That way threads don't fray and pull out. I also like to use any fabric that has a distinctly different texture or sheen than the base fabric.

   That really turned out well!  Very nice, really, your second dress?  Good for you!  You are very creative, can't wait to see what you come up with next! 

   I agree with artfulenterprises re contrasting fabric for appliques!  Organza is a favorite of mine too.  Just be sure the care method is the same and prewash of course to avoid bleeding dyes!  Ulta suede is another fun one but on heavy fabrics.   Mary

   I love your dress! Certainly doesn't look like a beginner dress. You have given it the designer touch. Another idea is to use a loosely woven fabric, cut the appliqué larger than needed. Stitch and allow the excess fabric to fringe. You could use a brush to get it to unravel. This could add some interesting texture as well.

   I love working with sheers in layers. They do magical things. I like to put prints under prints and see what the "blend" makes happen. I have made a few skirts like that and worn them to bits.
