Here’s my wool coat…

purduemom | Posted in Photo Gallery on

This is my coat.  The wool is a very pretty pink and red mohair wool that was an Ebay purchase.  The warp is pink loopy mohair and the weft is red loopy mohair.  There is also a dark red/pink twisted yarn going both directions.  The buttons have a small bit of needle-felting.  The lining is a brocade with pink satin piping along the facing edge – my version of the article in Threads issue #123.  The pattern is a slightly shorter version of McCall’s 5247.  This was my first coat and I must say I am quite happy with the way it went together!

First off...  WOW!!!!  Amazing coat!  I applaude your work, it's beautiful.  If this is your first coat, I can't imagine what the next will look like!

A few questions... 1.  What seller on ebay did you purchase from?  The fabric is gorgeous!  2.  What made you choose brocade to line it?  It's just as beautiful inside as out.  and 3.  How did you do the buttons?

    Job well done!

Thank you all for your very kind comments!  There is an amazing amount of talent on this board and I truly flattered by your words.  Since several had similar questions I thought it easiest and a more effiecient use of discussion space to post a group response.  Pattern: McCall's 5247; alterations: lengthen the sleeves, should have lowered the side pockets a little - I think they are almost too high, shortened the length by about 5 inches.

Buttons: covered with the coat wool that had been needle felted with maroon and hand-dyed roving that I purchased at an Indiana sheep breeders state meeting; not functional - I covered large coat snaps with the same satin used for the piping.

Why brocade?:  I suggested my daughter use brocade to line a wool jacket she made for 4-H this year.  It turned out so pretty, I figured I would do the same!  Besides the 'pretty factor", the brocade provides a little extra interior support to the loose weave.  I am not sure how well this will wear - after modeling it a couple of times, I realize I have to be careful my rings do not catch on it. I will be more careful of the weave in the brocade next time.

Fabric:  Sorry, I have had it for about 3 years and can't remember or find the seller - I think it was part of an estate.

This coat is why I sew...I love everything about the creative process of taking a flat piece of fabric and turning it into a unique, functional, 3-dimensional garment.  I am sure you all know the feeling!        Purduemom

Be sure to turn your rings facing your palms when putting on your beautiful coat.

I second that - WOW!  Very, very nice.  That is just beautiful.  I love the piping on the inside.  Very professional looking!
