Fabric of Her Life

rodezzy | Posted in Photo Gallery on

The small wall hanging is almost entirely from my childhood friends’ mothers dresses.  Only the backing and binding is my own fabric.  I added black quilters cotton in order to create the design for the larger wall hanging.  All of the other fabrics are from the clothing fabrics.  Some were dresses, and some were blouses.  I will be quilting the big one tonight, the little one is done, I have two more pieces to complete this weekend.  They asked me for a signature quilt for the family reunion guests to sign and I have another wall hanging I want to make out of the clothing fabric.  I am using all of my own fabrics, which I picked out last night, for the signature quilt.

    Hi Rodezzy

What a fabulous idea! This has never occurred to me. For many years I kept a piece of fabric from all the clothes I sewed for my children (mostly cottons), then I gave it all away. What a quilt I could have made if I'd but thought about it.

    Good wishes - Katina

Katine - I did make a quilt of my daughter's baby clothes.  It took me (gulp) 20 years to complete.  When I gave it to her, she said,  "Mom, my whole life is in the quilt."  Gail

Oh Gail - a truly priceless gift.

I don't have a thing from my son's life either.  I never saved anything after the basement flooded at my house in 1990.  I was devistated and never wanted to feel that loss again.  I stopped saving.

You have the memories Rodezzy - can never lose those.

OH, Rodezzy, I love you!  You understand the meaning of womanhood, of motherhood, of sistership!  You are atuned to rare and wonderful secrets shared by only half the world.  A private world filled with joy brought, not only by maternity, but by even the potential for maternity.  Enjoy!  Rejoice!  Be Joyful!  Gail

Gail, you are making me weak today, I can't cry at work.  Thank you for your kind words.  I can't wait to finish my projects this weekend, and going to Ohio next week to give them to my friend, her husband and family.

Rain down on me:  good thoughts for a safe trip there and back; lots of fun and warm welcomes, good food with good people and it will be all worth the work I've put in these last few weeks.  I hope they feel the love and excitement I've put into these projects for them.  I'm giddy to the point of exhaustion.  giggle.

      Thank you again.

I have never met anyone who didn't appreciate a gift like you have made!  And the best part is the way it makes you feel too, don't you think?  I really like your small quilt pattern for the flowers.  You are truely an angel.

Thanks for your kind words.  I have found joy in the doing and creating.  I can't wait to give it to them.  They have their "dream" home now and I'm looking forward to seeing these projects displayed in the home.

These quilts are amazing, and indeed the "fabric of her life".  Your friend will cherish these quilts, just as she does the memories of her mother.  Safe travels on your journey to Ohio to visit your dear friend and her family.

Thank you, I'm glad you like them.  Thanks for the good travel thoughts.  I need all I can get in these days.

Woweee!!!  I can't believe you whipped up those declicous quilts so fast!  They are both beautiful.  I especially love the way that border goes with the applique.  The black really sets off the prints on the other one well too.  Way to go lady!  Mary

Thanks Lady Mary.  It was a thrill.  When I'm on a roll, I'm on a roll.  giggle

O, you fibre artist, you!  Those are lovely!  Wasn't it nice to be able to recycle, too?  You'll have a busy weekend ahead of you & I'm sure you'll post pics of the signature quilt when it's done.  Will you complete the quilt & have them sign then, or will you provide squares with backing to sign at the event & you'll make the quilt later?

Your friends will LOVE the quilt & wallhanging!  You did an excellent job, as usual.  Have a safe trip (are you driving?) & a wonderful visit.

Thank you Gloriasews, missing you, glad to hear from you today!!!!!  Yes, it was great fun and as for the signature quilt, I will complete it totally so I won't have to have any afterwork to do.  I don't want to have to bring it home and send it back.  It should be O.K.  I will oversee the signing to make sure it goes all right.  They live so far away and since I'm driving up, it's getting there pretty much free, don't want the cost of shipping later.

      1. Gloriasews | | #17

Yah, completing it first will save you a lot of work & postage.  I'm assuming you'll insist they use a good fabric pen - o, you said you were overseeing it, so you'll have that pen clutched in your soft little hand as you go from person to person.  I hope you don't spend the whole outing getting that quilt signed (you know how people keep moving & you have to track them down).  You've at least got to be able to sit down, rest your feet & have some goodies :).  Sunshine & roses to you, too, this weekend.

        Gloria

Honey, I won't be sitting around.  My friend has me going to the zoo, waterpark, and as of last night, helping her grilling at the picnic for 70 people.  I will probably be glad to come home.  he he giggly whew!

No kidding - you'll need a holiday when you come home!  Wow - that's a busy, busy visit!  Have fun, anyway, as you're sure to do.

Yea, I'm supposed to go on a bus trip July 8 and then I have the rest of the week off.

          3. Gloriasews | | #21

You'll get rested up after your trip (if you don't spend it sewing or shopping :)

I know you will have a fun vacation!  You thrive on all that activity!  I love going to waterparks!  Enjoy your time with your special friend, those times are so preciouse, as are all your lovely gifts from your heart and art.  Godspeed!  Mary

The joyous celebration then will become part of 'the fabric of your life'.  Have a wonderful time.  Gail

You are so full of good ideas. I love that memory quilt. I wish I had done something like that with some of my mother's things. The design nicely complements the fabrics you used.
