Hey everyone,
I finished my two Halter Sun Dresses for my 5 year old Giselle…so I let her choose which one she wants for her Easter Dress..
Giselle picked out this pattern sometime ago and has been bugging me about making her dresses…So she picked out the style and I guided her through my material…she had fun knowing she was in the design process not to mention she made sure that my applique’s on the one dress looked like the picture on the pattern packet..too funny..
The Pattern: New Look 6690
She was drawn to the Halter style but there is another style on there as well..
I used a size 4 pattern pieces and it really turned out great the only thing I adjusted on it was the elastic length for the back..I used the size 3 guide instead of the size 4…
This as you see was a very simple dress but how cute is it!! And she loves them
She did decide on which one for Easter…that would be the pink one (of course)..
Just a construction note too…I used my gathering foot for the ruffle on the bottom….worked like a charm…I loved it and made the ruffle go by really fast…and very easy to pin…All I did was take sample fabric to get the amount of gathering needed…….
So now it is on to my other daughters 10 year old Skort..I will make for her as part of her Easter outfit…and as a very wonderful gal around here (MaryinColorado) said….I will enjoy the process…and I am diving right in…soon

How lucky you are to have such a talented mother. You chose such a pretty feminine pattern. It must have been difficult deciding which was to be your Easter dress. You look pretty in both.

Dear Action Dreamer,I love your screen name!! I have been putting my dreams into Action!!Thank you so much for your compliments!! I read Giselle her note from you and she smiled and giggled or should I say squealed as she only can..I believe that was a thank you!!I strive to really make all my items with the non look of Homemade! So again thank you for your compliments!! Such a simple pattern can look so wonderful...I have really been trying to challenge myself lately in my sewing..Like that simple ruffle...I use to hate doing ruffles as I felt they always looked off to me..Now with a little time taken to practice on the gathers with my foot.. I got a perfect ruffle. And believe me the ruffle in both dressed were different as the weight of material used and such..So that was my challenge for my dresses..Now I have more confidence when doing ruffles..So that is what I am working this year on..taking my most uncomfortable things I am scared to tackle in my sewing and really mastering them...and it just could be a simple thing to most but I know everyone has those. I have felt such a wonderful sense of confidence since I have joined this Gatherings Forum!! With all the help and instructions as I am reading! I have learned so much!!So I know I wrote you back a novel but I just wanted to say thanks and you will soon be seeing the other outfit coming this week!! That is if my 10 year old will stay home long enough for me to measure her! ha ha ha..she is 10 and on spring break and it is all about the sleep overs!!Blondie

Thanks Mary,Yes I too have to agree I like the white one as well...But come on Mary the other is "pink" ha ha ha...But she is wearing the white one today...with a sweater of course since it is still cold out! And I have to keep telling her no the pink one we need to debut on Easter then she can wear it..she had plans on wearing the pink tomorrow...So I think I might have to hide that one till Sunday. Ha ha ha
My nickname in junior high was "Pinkie", my best friend, also Mary had the same nickname, we both have brothers named Danny and her Dad's name was Whitey! Talk about confusing chaos! At home, my family was all D's except my sister and I, our names rhymed. I don't know which home was more fun with all the names being called and too many people answered. Of course, the pink dominated wardrobes were exceptional!
When my grand daughter was a baby, we'd hold up dresses in the store before she could even talk. She would reach for the pink ones and make faces and look away from red every time, shaking her head no. The clerks thought she will have a career in fashion. At 13, she has her own natural style and doesn't get caught up in the hype. This year she finally appreciates red clothing, but that is her big brother's high school color and she is all about school spirit.
I understand your daughters wishes to wear that pink dress. Saving it for Easter will make it even more special! She looks so pretty in pink! Mary
I loved your story!! Giselle loves alot of colors..she really loves Pink as well as Reds..actually we put the combo together alot..like her room...she is in heaven...she loves Purple as well...She really is drawn to color...I love to see her process when coloring and such..I am drawn to pinks and reds myself..however I really love love love yellow!! something about yellow..very happy color
Blondie, you did a wonderful job on these dresses. I can tell your little sweetie loves them too! I applaud you for letting her in on the design process. First, it teaches them to make decisions, but even more important, you are creating a future sewist. How do I know? That's exactly how I started when I was Giselle's age. So, congratulations to you on your parenting skills and to Giselle on her wonderful design choices.
Thanks!! I really had to let go of the dressing thing when my oldest was little...I try to guide them but I also let them dress themselves!!And sometimes it shows but oh well!! They love that freedom...but as you know I every once in awhile have to veto stuff!! ha haAnd yes I too think it is fun having them help!! Makes them apart of it and feel more special!! And Yes I may have a couple of sewers in my house besides me!!

One of my friend's little girl's word for "pretty" was "pink". She would say "I want to wear 'pink' one" ... which also meant a dress and not shorts!!

well done - I like the white one best but I understand about "pink" - my younger daughter (now 20) only wore pink until a few years ago when she branched out into other colours. I think it had something to do with her "Barbie" obsession! I still sew for my girls so you have many years of sewing pleasure ahead.
