Coats Made Last Year

rodezzy | Posted in Photo Gallery on

Here we go!  I did not make the blue jean coat, I just knitted the collar and cuff embellishments.

You are just a sewing dynamo! Great treatment on the jean jacket but they are all great. solo

Thanks, I'm glad to share.  I have fun wearing them too!

I love the black and red one!  Good thing you live in Chicago, so you can use a coat several months of the year!  Gail

Yes, I love the season changes.  I wouldn't want to live somewhere that is hot all the time.  I love the fall tree color changes, and I love the snow.  I like to look out of the window and see the pretty pretty snow.  Then spring brings fresh grass, flowers and leaves.  Summer brings outdoor fun and traveling.  And don't think that I haven't been in some very bad seasons.  I've hid from tornados in Michigan, crippling snow storms in Chicago and Michigan.  I've suffered through 100+ days, but I still love the changing of the seasons.  It gives me hope and something to look forward to in nature.

And it gives me a reason to sew.

What you said reminded me that EVERY fall when I see the trees change color I get carried away with how beautiful everything looks and want to paint.  A few years ago I got out my watercolor paper, ( Doesn't a stack of pristine paper get you as excited as bolts of beautiful fabric?) and as I put my first strokes on the paper, reality set in.  I suddenly remembered.... my painting skills in NO way are equal to what I see in my imagination!

My abilities with painting just aren't up to my standards.  Fabric gives me an outlet for creativity that makes me feel good about the results.  With paper and paint I'm just average, but with fabric it's different. So, I when I see the fall colors I just smile and enjoy them.

I truly understand that.  I get excited by fabric and want to buy all I see.  Luckily I don't have that kind of money.  I don't sew enough to buy all the fabric I like.

But I'm sure your painting can bring you satisfaction if you just except the fact that you don't have to make a replica of nature, just your interpretation of the colors and let the joy of color sooth your soul.  That's what the impressionists did.  They reveled in the joy of color on paper, not the replication of the object.

When I was about 10 yrs old, I would make ink sketches of one twig, branch, leaf, weed or whatever and just making that stark black and white line drawing was soothing.  I never painted anything, just every once in a while I'll put ink to some construction paper and get a little artist satisfaction.

Hardly anything is as beautiful or soothing as an ink drawing on white paper or the elegant stark trees against a Winter sky.  Takes my breath away everytime!

Cool, breezy, beautiful late September, morning, Sunday, here in Missouri.  I looked great in my pleated wool skirt, crisply ironed blouse, jacket, hose, and shoes that covered my whole foot, as we left for church.

My husband even mentioned how nice it was to see me in "Grown up clothes".

12:15p.m..........I wanted to rip my clothes off in the parking lot, Miss Rodezzy!!!!  Blazing sun, Humid South wind, and 88 sticky, steamy degrees.  I want my Fall NOW!

In fact, Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Southern Michigan Summertime was never like this!  Gail

Wow!  You have a great wardrobe of coats.  Your work inspires me, and I'm itching to get home and start sewing.  I think my next project will be a tapestry jacket, now that the weather is getting cooler (80's today, but it's cooler than it has been lately!).  Maybe I'll get it finished by the time I really need to wear it.  :-)

What's a tapestry jacket?  I have a thought, but what is the fabric like and where do you get it?

Sounds like a great bog coat material, you think?

It was my dear sweet Hubby's idea to stop at G Street Fabrics outside DC in Virginia on our way home from Philadelphia.  I found a piece of tapestry upholstery/home dec fabric with a large diamond shaped design in jewel tones (deep blue, red, green, gold), and I thought it would make a nice jacket to wear with jeans and pants when it's not too cold.  (Wish I could post a picture of it...I love the colors!)

I've seen the bog coat, and I think it would be beautiful in tapestry!  My jacket pattern is a similar boxy shape, but with set-in sleeves.  I figured the simple lines wouldn't detract from the fabric's design.  I haven't decided if I will line it or just bind the raw seam edges.  I don't really need the warmth, but it may look and fit better if it's lined?

Oh, now I get the picture.  Lucky lady!  Have fun making your coat/jacket.  I've got two sweater coats almost finished and should start a fleece coat tonight or tomorrow depending on whether I need to purchase notions.  I'm excited about the sweater, jacket weather myself.  I love wearing exciting cover ups.

    Rodezzy,

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I do like this coat very much. I must be changing, pink was never really one of my colours.

I think it's the extra embroidery on it that makes it appealing to me.

Like you, I would need to be in freezing temps to wear it around here.

Im glad you were proud to wear it when you could and got the good glances from passers by.

Now i will look at your other works of art!
