Christening gown #1

solosmocker | Posted in Photo Gallery on

I have finally finished my two christening gown projects for my upcoming grandtwins.

This first gown is a traditional boys gown. I started with McCalls 3063, view F, a pintucked bubble. I pulled out the bodices, and sleeves and that was the end of any connection to the pattern. I did pintucks on the bodice front, much less than the pattern specified, and centered featherstitching embroidery. Oh, the fabric is ecru silk taffeta. I shortened the bodice and added a small strip of geometric wave smocking. There is a tiny piping on the collar, cuffs, and above and below the smocking. The piping is wrapped with embroidery thread. I had to draft a collar as the one in the pattern was a peter pan collar and I wanted a pointed collar. I was going for a more subdued masculine treatment every step of the way. For that reason I did relatively large pleats for the skirt instead of gathers. The hem is the piped hem that I have explained before in my dress for the wedding.

    Hi solo,

I have just been drooling over your gowns, they are simply stunning. I must confess I do love the girlie gown with it's beautiful lace. You are a wander and I envy your talent and creativity. Has your daughter seen the gowns yet?

    Warmest regards,

Thanks so much, everyone. DD doesn't know these exist. I will bring them when the babies are delivered. I know she will be pleased. Thanks again for the lovely comments. This is the type of work I truly enjoy. Now its on to two little sailor outfits that I am smocking for them for next summer. Those will take me a while but should be sweet. solo

Oh the gown is so precious and you are remarkable in your skills as a sewer.  I'm taking notes.  Wonderful, beautiful christening gown.

Can I add my congrats too on such fine work --- but also such talent. I hope that the parents appreciate all the love and care that has gone into their making when dressing the babies.

I believe that is the most beautiful boy's Christening gown I have ever seen!  Your children and grandchildren are so blessed to have you and all the lovely heirlooms you create.

What wonderful work, as usual.  The changes you made to the pattern really made it look more masculine.  As someone else said, this will really be an heirloom.

Beautiful work. Wonderful design. You make me miss heirloom sewing more than I thought I did by looking at your pictures. I just loved the smocked band and the matching piping. Very, very creative and professional looking.
