Blue Ribbon Skirt

VKStitcher | Posted in Photo Gallery on

I won a Blue Ribbon! It’s a simple summer skirt, nothing special, but my ASG (American Sewing Guild) friends told me to take it to the State Fair. I’ve never entered a Fair competition before, but I figured it would be fun. Imagine how shocked I was to find out that I won first place! Even after seeing it on display with the ribbon, I still can’t believe it!

You took a simple skirt and made it special with the ribbon. Beautiful.

Thank you! Here's a story about the trim... I wanted black ribbon for the trim, but when I went to the store (a local independent fabric store), all she had was the black & white polka dot. Hmmm. I was on my way home from work, and didn't want to backtrack to go to Joann's or Hancock's. OK, I guess I can use the back side, which is solid black. When it was time to add the ribbon to the skirt, I decided to use the dotted side, instead of the solid. In the end, it turned out better! Serendipity...I love it when that happens! :-)

Congratulations.  It is adorable, that's why it won.

That skirt is fabulous.  Simple but classy. Congratulations.

I love it!  They must have also thought your sewing talents were worth a blue ribbon.  The skirt looks very neat and clean with just the right touch of class, congratulations.

Congratulations! It has style and you have flair.

Thank you all for the compliments. I didn't think I had a chance of winning anything, this being my first entry. And you should see some of the intricate and creative things that have won ribbons for other ASG members.Winning the Blue Ribbon was exciting enough, but as an added bonus it comes with a $10 prize!

      1. Gloriasews | | #12

Your skirt looks like it was constructed perfectly, & that's what got you the prize, plus a whole $10!   You deserved it.  Be proud!

            You're welcome, again :).

Lovely and congratulations. I've won some ribbons at our local and county fair and it was a real ego boost. Unfortunately at the time I won them I was married to a real bozo that wouldn't let me talk about anything I did and so I never got to share with my 'significant other' that I had won blue ribbons. Current hubby is very proud of my accomplishments, but I get sick every year when it is time to take the stuff to the fair and I'm always scared I won't be able to pick it up, so I would lose it so I haven't exhibited for awhile.

Keep showing your stuff at each years fair, it will give you warm fuzzy feelings every year. Congrats again.

Thanks for your compliments, Gail.It made me sad that you haven't exhibited your work at the fair in a long time--you do make such nice things, as evidenced here on this forum, and by your own blue ribbons! Put the past behind you and go for it next year. Your husband (and all of us here) will be so proud of you, and you can feel those "warm fuzzies" all over again when you come home with more blue ribbons. :-)P.S. I took a peek at your blog, and enjoyed reading through it. I like your idea about the 2x4 quilts. I may use your idea of cutting up scraps to make my own quilts for Project Linus--I have a huge bin of fabric that was donated to PL that I'm sewing on...

Thank you! I don't know if there will be any more blue ribbons, but I plan on entering something in the fair again next year.

When I saw the title of the thread, Blue Ribbon Skirt, I thought it must be about a clever way to use one's first place ribbons!  Keep it up, and you'll soon be able to make one! :)

Your skirt is lovely and the trim you chose for the fabric is pure genius.  That alone should have gotten you first place.

You are too kind--I'm not a genius by any means! What was first a disappointment (the store not having solid black ribbon) turned into something better than I imagined! :-)

      1. Jenlin | | #25

The picture does not do justice to your skirt and the professional way it was constructed. So glad you entered it, and won. Pat S. ASG friend

Thank you Pat! I never would have entered it if you all hadn't encouraged me to.

Being a part of ASG has improved my sewing skills, expanded my knowledge, sparked my creativity, and brought me new friends who share my love of sewing. See you at the next meeting...

          Vickie :-)

Your skirt is so cute! No wonder it won a blue ribbon . Definately keep entering. I've always been very hesitant about entering anything I make but you have inspired me to give it some more thought. Congradulations! A Blue Ribbon!! That's definetly a WOW!

Thanks for the compliment Gee. I have always admired the beautiful clothes and quilts at the fair, but never thought about entering anything before. You should definitely consider it. It's cool to see your work on display, and you never know...you could win too! :-)

          Hey Miss Rodezzy! You're
Hey Miss Rodezzy! You're right--this site is unrecognizable. I'm not liking the changes so much. It's cumbersome to navigate, hard to follow the conversations, difficult to find new (and old) posts, and it's not nearly as active as it used to be. I'm afraid a lot of the "regulars" have become "irregulars", if they haven't already given up on it. That's really a shame--it was such a wonderful community of sewing friends!

I want to hope that the kinks will get worked out soon, but I'm afraid that the damage has been done, and many of our friends have moved on. I still check in to see if there's anything going on, but it's just not the same place......
