Well, I finally finished my August challenge. The dress for the wedding was like pulling teeth working with all that poly but it came out fine when all was said and done. My little beach dress, I love. It was so simple and loved working with the linen. Here’s the pics:
ETA: I put in a picture of the hem because it is a technique I learned ffrom Threads many years back. You end up with a tiny mock piping at the hemline which I think is a really pretty hem for sheers.

Here's the beach dress. With dialup it wouldn't load the last pic. guess too much KB. Oops, my own fault, I was posting the extra large version of the pic. So lets try again here:
Two great dresses. Your dress for the wedding - so feminine looking! The hem technique - is that the one where you stitch, trim, fold up and stitch, fold and stitch again? It looks great. And your beach dress - perfect! I bet it's a pleasure to wear. Thanks for sharing.
Not really! You turn the hem up 1/4 inch twice to the RIGHT side. Then you stitch down the middle of that. Then you flip to the wrong side and press. You are left with the little mock piping. So there is only one row of stitching and no more. The rest is accomplished with pressing. It is just so quick and easy. solo

Here's a couple of pics again. The first shows the fold and the stitching down the middle and the second shows the completed hem. I am probably duplicating here.
the hem finish IS great, thanks for the photos.
Thanks for the positive feedback. I hope my hem instructions were clear. Just to clarify a little more, you fold up 1/4 inch to right side and do a hard press, then you repeat this again, hardpress, then stitch down the middle, fold to the back, hard press. solo
Just tried a sample hem - absolutely wonderful and so easy! Thank you for your generosity in sharing techniques.
I love seeing photos of your work - always so beautifully crafted and inspiring.
Regards Pauline
I am glad you made a sample to try out the technique. Talk is one thing but to actually do it and see it is quite another sometimes. Thanks for the compliments.

Ahh, I see now. What an attractive finish. Thank you.
How well you described that - I tried it as I was reading, on a scrap piece, and can see it would be a lovely and easy finish. Thanks
They both look great. you've done it again. In the photo, the wedding dress looks sheer and cool. When I heard linen, I was expecting something heavier..."my bad."

Wonderful work!
Thanks for the hem tip too!

Well done! Both dresses are lovely and embody the spirit of summer beautifully.
Wow! Beautiful dress........you do yourself proud!! I peeked at the beach dress and I love that as well. I had such good intentions of making some things for myself but DD has been keeping me busy with sewing for her business. It's taking off and the factory isn't keeping up. Guess that's a 'good' problem for a start-up business!! Anyway, your things are beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing the pix.
Happy Stitching!
Kay
Glad you like them, Kay. Congrats to your daughter on her success. Its wonderful that you can pitch in. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree you know!Solo
you all are inspiring. I got the sloper done and fused it to medium interfacing. and then several other projects distracted me - like taking my cat to the arboretum) and so I haven't even monogrammed the napkins as a gift for my neighbor.
Hi Solo! I've just been looking at the pictures of all of your projects and everything is just beautiful. You have been busy! Was the linen dress from a pattern or did you create that one yourself?
Once again - nice job on all of your items!

ETA: Is there a name for that method of hemming?

This is the pattern for the linen dress: http://www.simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=3738
It was very quick and so easy. I am not aware of any specific name to the sheer hem technique. If anyone knows one please let me know. It came from an article in Threads probably 7-10 years back titled "Hems of Sheer Brilliance". I am not at home but I may be able to find the issue with a little digging when I get back from vackay. solo
Thank you, Solo! I'm sorry to be such a pain but I asked you about the wrong dress - I was wondering about the other one. I love the neckline on that - very cute. Just if you think about it when you get home. Enjoy your vacation!

No problem. It is Simplicity 3783. The ruffled neckline is something I atached and was not in the pattern. I did this because the neck line was quite wide and low on my petite frame. I added to the neckline AND added the ruffle as well so the original neckline is quite "open." solo
Wow! You did quite a bit of alteration, didn't you? It's really a nice looking dress and I love your material, too. Thank you for letting me know!
