pattern suggestions

MarieCurie | Posted in Patterns on

I’m looking for a little girl (size 6) dress pattern for a simple knit dress that pulls over her head–one layer of fabric, no zippers.  Any suggestions?

I have no specific suggestions but would really recommend Kwik-Sew - either patterns or the Kwik-Sew Sewing for Children book. I had that (as well as Sewing for Toddlers) and they were quite worn out by the time my grandchildren grew out of the size range. Simple clothing, good directions and very reasonable price.Bevaau

I second the KwikSew pattern books. Chris

I looked up the Kwik sew books on Amazon, and they looked a lot like what I want.  I have my MIL looking and asking her friends if they have a copy.  Usually the first thing I do when I want a book is call the library and get it on interlibrary loan.  Alas, our local interlibrary loan program has recently fallen victim to state budget cuts, and now costs $2, paid in advance, to request a book.  I'm hesitant to do it and find the master patterns are not included.

Of course, my princess needs more dresses like she needs a third eyeball.

I hear you. I rediscovered crocheting after my grandaughters were born. And I get to sew girly clothes again until they discover jeans and t shirts like their mothers.Chris

I'm going to sew pink dresses for her unceasingly while I have the chance.  Some terrible day she will say "no more dresses, mommy."  Until then, she's on the receiving end of both mommy and grandma's desire for cute girly sewing.  And grandma, who had only boys, has 50 years of pent-up desire to unleash on her only granddaughter.

And I only have 25 years to practice to sew the pink wedding gown she's already picked out for me to make.

Yes, that terrible, horrible day comes all to soon! Wahhhhh! Then you get to sew cute pink and purple T-shirts, and jeans, jean shorts, and denim jackets. Maybe they let you put lace and sparkly things on them. Sometimes you get to make dressed up outfits for dances, and grown up outfits. Sigh...... Sew your heart out now darling! Cathy

Do you have a tshirt pattern that fits her? You can simply lengthen it or cut it off at any length and add a skirt of the same or different fabric - lots of opportunity for your own design there.

Suesew's suggestion of a T-shirt dress is excellent.   If a URL helps -

The tunic could be worn as a jumper, with a T under.

Another option is to take a pattern off a t-shirt that fits her; a length of waxed paper is usually wide enough to trace the folded front, folded back, and folded sleeve.

Children are usually cylindrical in shape, so you can extend the side seams straight down and not have to deal with any shaping.
