Well, I got home last night and got right down to business.  I twisted and turned and rearranged that pattern for an hour.  Didn't have any fabric to put with it that would work.  So I ditched that pattern and spent another half hour or so looking for another.  Then it popped up.  In one of my wardrobe patterns, there was a kimono jacket that used just the amount of fabric I had.  I ironed it up, pinned it down and made the jacket out of that.  Picture below.  The little white dots are pins.  I was just flattening the facing to eyeball for a trim.

Guess the fabric wanted to be a Kimono. Looks BEEUtiful! Does any of the other wonderful pieces of fabric want to be that new pattern? Maybe the one with the writing on it? Cathy

Don't know yet, before I retired (1:15 a.m.) I was spinning my wheels pulling all the outerwear fabrics I had bought over the past couple years and haven't used with a new determination.  I measured to get the yardage for each and cut out a denim coat.  He He.  I figured if I cut it out, I would make it.  And I will.  I am going to finish the Kimono and start the denim.  I've got to play cards this Saturday, and who knows what else will come up and I want some new outerwear!  Makes all the difference in the world.  New jacket, same old pants....giggle!

You made a new jacket in a night??  Where do you find the energy, woman?  Do you never sleep? :-)

I love that fabric and all the bright colors in it.  Is the design printed or embroidered on?  You can wear this coat with lots of different tops underneath-- it will be a very versatile piece of your wardrobe.

      1. rodezzy | | #7

Thanks.  Yes, it's only a five piece pattern.  Back, two fronts, two sleeves and a facing.  Since, I'm an empty nester, I have loads of time to sew.  I get home early from work because I start at 7:30 a.m., and when I get on a run to do something, I just plow through it.

The fabric was purchased that way, it is embroidered.  Great huh!  I try to purchase fabrics that have strong personalities, that way I don't have to do much work making it get that "Wow" factor.  Actually, that was the best pattern after all for that fabric.  I should have taken a picture of the back.

Any who, hemmed the jacket last night, then put together the denim coat I cut out, night before last.  Tonight I will hem that, put in shoulder pads, and hopefully have time to embellish.  What usually happens is, by Friday, I pass out and don't do nothing.  So, here we go:  The coat fits perfect.  I didn't have to make any adjustments to the pattern.  It is a Khaliah Ali Collection Pattern and I will try more of hers, for my fat butt....giggle.

Whew, you are really sewing up a storm!  This is a nice jacket too, I can't wait to see how you will embellish it.  But there's plenty of time for that.  Get some rest this weekend, dear.  :-)

          1. rodezzy | | #22

Thanks, I have some buttons I purchased a while back for a denim jacket or coat.  This may be the perfect opportunity to use them.  Oh, now I remember, I purchased them at the International Quilt Show in April.

Yes, I am tired.  But even if I go home and sleep for a while, I will be back up around 7:00 p.m. and at it again.  It's raining here and I will be home.  I have a busy day tomorrow.  Nothing Sunday.  So will probably sew.

            Have great weekend.

        2. Gloriasews | | #23

Very nice, Rodezzy!  Have you decided how you will embellish it?  It's just not YOU, yet, until it's embellished :).  I like the Kaliah Ali patterns, too.  Did you wear the kimono jacket to work today?

          Gloria

OOOOH, AAAAHHHHH!!!!!!! That is GORGEOUS, woman! And you let on like you barely sew....LMAO!  When do you sleep???? I've gotten replies from you at 1 & 2 AM.  Do you just drop over from exhaustion and jump up and go to work a couple of hours later?????  Do you ever eat?????  You have got to be the busiest, most productive person I've ever known! (and we've never met.....giggle, giggle...you've got me in stitches.)

Where do you find the beautiful fabric???  Aren't you near Chicago?  That's where my mom's family was from....although I know I have cousins (several times removed) up there, I don't really know anyone anymore....you know how BIG Italian families are...LOL

      Deb

      1. rodezzy | | #8

I am in the heart of Chicago on the Southeast side.

Now, I never said I barely sew, I said I rarely make clothes since high school.  giggle.  My body has changed, but I have found inspiration with you guys.  But I still don't like to line nothing.  I have been thinking about that too, over the past couple weeks as I prepare to make more outerwear.  Why is it I don't like to line jackets and coats.  I've had some bad experiences with linings, I can't even line a purse with confidence.  I need some classes.  Someone who can unlock and banish my fear of linings.  I don't have a problem with details, I notice that I do spend time doing time consuming sewing, but those linings make my butt itch.  I don't even line my curtains.  Just the thought of trying to sew those two lengths together evenly gives me the "willies."

Now, ThreadKoe, I took close up shots to show how perfect those stitches are now on my Singer.  I want to give you a special "Shout Out!" for helping me get my machines on track.  It was purrring like a kitten these past two nights.  I will clean it good when I finish the denim jacket.  Thanks so much.

My word, you have to be the fastest designer/cutter/seamstress around! From flat fabric to TWO finished projects in two days? Wow. Very nice looking, too.

          1. rodezzy | | #11

Thanks, but the denim coat has some more work ahead.  If I don't pass out sleep when I get home tonight, I will finish it.  I'm one of those hot or cold people.  I get hot to do something and I'm all over it for a while.  I spend all my spare time working on stuff.  Then after I complete as much as I can get out of my system, I stop "cold".  giggle.

Stuff that didn't get done, goes back in storage for my next blitz!  giggle.  You should see the line up of fabric for outwear I have cued up for sewing.  I'll never do it all.  It takes one botched project and I'm "out of there"......giggle.

So, lets hope I don't mess up nothing and get more done.  Cross your fingers!!!

You did good Girl! The stitches look great and you did it yourself. All I did was give you the know how. Those jackets look great! Now all that has to be done is a little FEAR FACTOR on LININGS! I guess the best bet there is to pull out all your Threads issues on the subject and read up on it first. Then, when you have some $$ and a project in mind, we will work on it. We will use a GOOD lining fabric, and that makes it a LOT easier Girl. Cathy

          1. rodezzy | | #13

Thanks for your kind words. You got me going on those machines.

HA! I've read all the tricks and techniques, and I even bought good fabric for linings.  And actually any fabric is good fabric for linings according to some.  I have watched Sandra Betzina on my tapes do linings and I have a really good book on it.  I hate slippery fabrics and refuse to work with them.  I know I can use cotton, but...Oh heck.....I have a mental block when it comes to linings.  The weird thing is....I love the look.

It's the same with jersey, or any stretchy fabrics.  I refuse to go the distance.  I run from them like the plague.  Just like, if a piece takes too much fitting, NOT DOING IT.

Giggle LOL, I'm a cop out when it comes to too much fussing around with fabric.

I see, it is the slippery stuff you do not like. Now that I can understand. Gonna get you on that still tho Girl. One of your Dolly Ladies is going to need something fancy one of these days! Will get you to try a bit somehow.... Tee hee Cathy

I'm with you about lining garments, but I've gotten into _underlining_ jackets/coats in a big way. Treat the lining fabric and fashion fabric as one, and I almost always do a Hong Kong finish on the seam edges once the seam is stitched. It's the next best thing to making and inserting an actual lining!!

        4. Teaf5 | | #26

Two reasons to use linings:  1) they don't have to match exactly, and in fact fit better when they're slightly loose and just tucked in at seams and tacked down at the hem, and 2) if you use a lining, you don't have to worry about seam finishes.  Especially on a vest or jacket, it's a whole lot faster to line than to finish all the edges and all the seam allowances.

And a bonus reason:  if you fully line something with another fashion fabric, it becomes reversible!

          1. rodezzy | | #27

Thanks, but I've heard it all before.  It depends what you are making and if it doesn't come out right than it's double the time.  Been there...did that.  I wore my kimono jacket this morning and in my travels to work, I received compliments on my Monday morning stops.  I finished everything on the denim coat, except for buttons.  I haven't decided on what buttons to use, and out of all the buttons I have at home, none seem to say anything to me.  giggle, so it is buttonless, but I have time, don't need a coat here yet.

That jacket is absolutely gorgeous - I love it!  The kimono pattern was a much better match than your new one.  You'll get many, many compliments on this one & it will go with lots of stuff with all those colours.  Great job!  Maybe the new pattern will match up with one of the other pieces of fabric.

      Gloria

      1. rodezzy | | #9

You are so right Gloriasews, it was the best pattern.  I've got some ideas for that new one, can't wait to do that.  I'll spring that on you guys when I sew them.  I'm on a roll now.  giggle.

Thanks for your inspiration, it will go with lots of pieces.  I can just wear black items with it and let it shine.  Giggle.  Thanks.

        1. Gloriasews | | #24

Right on!  Now you need an assortment of tops to go with the black outfit, eh?  You should get years out of that jacket.

Holy Moly, Woman........that is absolutely GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!  You, my friend, are an inspiration to many of us sewists!!  I have a saying "My Soul is fed with needle and thread".........and that applied to you, too, I think!

      Wow!  beautiful jacket.......wear it proudly.

I really like that saying. Can I use it on my sewing room door? Cathy

        1. Crazy K | | #17

Yes, of course you may..........I am not the author.  I have a design from Emb. Library of a 'sewing angel' and that saying...... it's really cute........kind of a rustic, country style to her..........very sweet and I love that saying as well.  I think if I couldn't sew or at least stroke my fabric and thread I would surely shrivel up and die!

Ok, now I am really jealous, I have wanted a home embroidery system for years, sigh. I keep telling myself patience, mydear, patience. Cathy

          2. Crazy K | | #19

It is a fun hobby........but can get kind of expensive to get started.  Of course, part of that is just me........I couldn't buy one or two spools of thread.......I had to get the thread chests.......first rayon and then poly!!

I do enjoy it.......and I also sew and it's fun to make and embellish things so they are truly one of a kind.  It's my one and only hobby so I'm making the most of it!!  I guess I have to same love that that as quilters do for their stash and patterns!  Kind of gets in the blood!

Patience, my dear.  Good things come to those who wait.......

I took a job in commercial embroidery just to learn, and LOVED it. Had to quit for health reasons. Am debating asking them if they need anyone again. Part time anyhow, as I really miss it. They do the School Sportswear Programs and it is mostly winter work anyways. I do a lot of the in-school selling as well. I got to learn a lot, even the design end of it. So I have been saving for a few years now. As if I need yet another Hobby....Tee Hee Cathy
