Love the Jacket, Can’t find the Pattern
Hi Darlings,
I’m attaching here an image from the September 2001 issue of Threads. It’s a Delicious Details page with a marvelous Karen Meyer illustration of a princess-seam jacket with curved on-seam pockets. I would love to make this in a striped fabric (as shown) but the only information given was that it was “seen on an early 50s jacket.”
Do any of you know of a pattern that features these elements?
Though I’ve been sewing for years, my skills are not at the draft-my-own-pattern level yet and I need a pattern with illustrated instructions to follow, especially for this kind of detail. I’ve collected boxes of vintage patterns (hooray for eBay!) but none of my jacket patterns even come close.
Any information would be much appreciated!
Cheers!
Lolly

One thing to keep in mind is that this is a stylized drawing of a jacket (or top). The princess-style stripe pattern is easily achieved, but the curved bottom would show angled stitching from the mitering. Without playing with striped fabric (and it would have to be an even stripe) I am not sure that same effect is achievable, at least not exactly matching the drawing.
This is a great example of what can be done with couture methods of fabric manipulation. I think that it is something that you might be able to do if you had pattern drafting, manipulation techniques. It is not something that you would be able to just buy a pattern for my friend. It would involve lengthening a straight piece on the front, then darting it into a curve. Perhaps purchasing a piece of inexpensive striped fabric to play with might give you the courage to give it a whirl? Cathy
There are a couple of similar patterns on this site but I'm not sure the pockets are included in the patterns. You may be able to alter the pattern, though.
Like the other posters have said - the curved stripes are a concept easier drawn than sewn. Good luck!

Vogue had a pattern a few years ago with a similar pocket that I made for a customer - it was tricky and not fun to do. I'm sorry that I cannot give you the pattern number, but some searching in Vogue archives might work.
Not sure why, but I can't get the photo to open. I would love to see it though, maybe I'll just go look in my old Threads. What page was it on? I'd be happy to see if I have anything close.
You might try contacting Sandra Ericson of The Center for Pattern Design.
She also use to sell Vintage patterns and has a formidable collection. I believe she sent them as downloadable images which you can print on your own printer.
Here's a page from her new web site: http://www.centerforpatterndesign.org/content.aspx?page_id=22&club_id=547206&module_id=57363
Her business emphasis today is on pattern designers, not so much selling vintage patterns, but she may be able to offer some help or suggestions.
And, I agree with a previous poster, the pocket curves could only be reproduced by careful darting of the striped fabric. It would take a bit of experimentation to get it to look like the sketch (which shows no darts!). That's one of the first reality checks for young designer wanna-be's. It's way easier to draw something than to actually stitch what you draw. ;o)
