   Yukatas are basically a summer weight kimono, without lining in a cotton fabric so a kimono pattern or instructions should work.

   I've taken apart quite a few old kimonos and there are no curved or angled cutting lines; the sloped neckline is folded up inside the neckband rather than cut. The back neck is not curved. Apparently the Japanese were loath to actually cut fabric, any excess was usually folded into the neckband or taken up into an extra large seam.

   *I just rediscovered an article on Asian design that appeared in Threads issue 78. It was written by Linda Lee of The Sewing Workshop. She mentioned a book called "Make Your Own Japanese Clothes" by John Marshall, published by Kodansha International, which has "schematics for authentic Japanese garments". I've occasionally seen this book in Borders, but your best bet is probably one of the on-line sources

   *I have used John Marshall's book, and recommend it because you aren't restricted by arbitrary pattern sizing. All garments are based on real body measurments, as this is the traditional way. You can customize for tall, short, wide or thin figures. The pattern drafts are EASY! Even if you haven't drafted patterns before, give this a try. It's fun.One piece of advice, try this out in muslin or paper before cutting the actual fashion fabric. This way you can check your math and measurements and then sew the finished garment with confidence.

   *My mother has been wearing a cotton Kimono for a robe that she was given at a hotel in Japan years ago. It is totally worn out and I would like to replace it for her. I can't seem to find just a simple cotton Kimono. I live in Dallas and could use help locating this item. I don't sew!!
