Fleece instead of a woven?
Hello fellow sewers!
I sew with fleece a lot but, I've always used fleece specific patterns. I really want to make a coat using Simplicity pattern #2508 which is a raglan sleeved/princess seamed coat but, it recommends wovens or double knits. Are there any adjustments that I would need to make in order to make it out of fleece? Would I choose a larger size because of the bulk of fleece or a smaller size because of the stretch of the knit? Thanks in advance:-)

Fleece vs woven (post #34416, reply #1 of 5)
I would think that as your pattern suggests "double knits" you will be ok using the fleece. You might have to eliminate some facings as fleece patterns do; don't use buttonholes unless you have found a perfect way to work them in fleece.
I agree that the pattern (post #34416, reply #2 of 5)
I agree that the pattern should work unless you have a really stretchy fleece. I made a coat about ten years ago and I am still wearing it. I love the stretch ease it has. The only problem is that fleece isn't always that warm in really cold climates and i usually wear a heavy sweater or sweatshirt under it if it is really cold.

stillsuesew Did you notice if your coat stretched any over time? Is it a loose fitting or fitted?
Thanks for your replies! I'm going to start tracing the pattern out tonight:-) I'm making it for someone else so I really wanted it to come out good - thanks to both of you, I now have confidence lol, so I can actually enjoy the project!
I think my coat has stretched (post #34416, reply #5 of 5)
I think my coat has stretched a little over time, but it is an anorak design so it doesn't matter (and just accommodates the weight I've gained over the same time!) Happy new year
Consider No Pill Fleece and Interfacing if Possible (post #34416, reply #4 of 5)
Double knits have a low stretch. To get a similar effect with fleece, consider interfacing your matrial with a light knit interfacing. Woven may be to rigid. The interfacing will keep the fleece from moving around to much and add structure. It already sounds like a lovely, cozy project.
