Bridal Skirt

barbsewandsew | Posted in Patterns on

I am trying to find a pattern for a wedding dress for my daughter that is similar to a picture she has. The dress in the photo has an empire waist that is smooth at the bodice/skirt seam ( no gathers ) and has a full flowing chiffon overskirt. to get the smoothness at the bodice/skirt seam and fullness below the hip is that a bias cut skirt or on the straight grain? I have made formals before and have worked with chiffon but have never worked with bias. I would appreciate any help. Thanks for your time ! Barbara

If we had a picture we could be of some help, I'm sure. Is it somewhere on the internet that we can find?

This is the actual dress she likes......I can't find a picture of the dress that she tried on that had no gathers at the 'waist'  http://www.lovebyenzoani.com/ but this is one she loves ! Thanks ! B

All I get is a white sheet and LOVE written on it and no place to continue.

It's the first gown in the second row.

A10 Looks like it has a lot of gathers coming from the bodice, hidden because of the belt.

Yes, this one does have center front gathers, unlike the one she tried on in a store.......so does it look to you to be an A-line shape??

          4. fabricholic | | #10

If it didn't have the front gathers, I guess you could say it is a long A-line shape.

This dress is similar to the one she tried on and I don't know where the fullness comes from in the skirt?...not sure of the flat pattern shape

That's a very cute dress. I bet you it is a bias skirt. Someone will see this with more experience and figure it out. I think it is though.

            O.k. Look at this
http://www.voguepatterns.com/item/V8232.htm?search=8232&page=1I have this pattern and it is not on the bias. It jusst has two pieces and is shaped small at the top and larger at the bottom.

Yes, flared !!..guess that's what I needed to be looking for ! Thanks so much!

            Also, found this: http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/patterns/sewingpatterns.pl?patternid=4679

I have this one too but, I don't feel like looking for it. One is gored and I don't know if the other is on the bias or just elastic waist band. You know what you are looking for now.

To get the flare for a long skirt without gathering at the top, you'll need a gored skirt pattern.  The more gores you have, the more flare you can get, because each piece can fill the width of one length of fabric and each can be tapered wider at the bottom.  Gored skirts are very flattering to just about everyone and are easy to size and sew.

Unless your fabric is very, very wide, you probably can't cut it on the bias, but a widely flared, gored skirt has a lot of built-in bias in the lower part even when cut on the lengthwise grain of the fabric.

For the most dramatic effect, cut the gores as wide as you can fit on the fabric, or add godets at the bottom (another approach to adding flare).
