Advice for Marfy Patterns

Roznos | Posted in Patterns on

I am interested in trying a Marfy pattern; however, I understand that they contain no instructions (no guide sheet) no seam allowances,  minimal notches and grain lines.  In other words, they are designed for the advanced sewer.  I was wondering if anyone has used a Marfy pattern and if they have any advice.  I haven’t picked a pattern out yet, although I have a few favorites.  In Threads, a couple of issues ago, one of the test sewers made a coat from a Marfy pattern; however, there wasn’t a lot of detail info about the pattern, but it was enough to whet my appetite for a sewing challenge.

The Feb/Mar 2007 Vogue Patterns magazine has an article about Marfy patterns. It has lots of good information. I recommend that you have a look at that since it answers many questions.
I am making the coat that was pictured in Threads. I had the pattern and fabric before the article appeared. It was quite the puzzle taking the pattern pieces out of the brown envelope and deciding what went where. I decided to make a muslin first and learned that the pattern is rather closer fitting than I had anticipated. It was easy to adjust, but I'm really happy that I did the muslin first.
Getting the correct amount of yardage of fabric was tricky, too. The coat has a facing made with a second color of fabric, but that yardage is included in the total yardage needed. It's not listed separately. I could do the figuring for the facing, but didn't think to subtract it from the total. I will now make a skirt out of the extra fabric.
There are some markings in Italian, French, and English. For example, at the shoulder area there is the notation "stuffing" which I interpreted to mean shoulder pads should go there.
It is fun. If you enjoy a challenge this should do the trick.

I made a Marfy wedding dress, yes, it is like a puzzle, as this dress had some unusual style lines, it took me a while to play with the pieces and figure out what went where. they do come with grain lines, and few match points, the translation of Italian to English leaves a bit to be desired - I forget exactly how it was worded about placing the piece on the fold! really funny.I would certainly make another MArfy pattern, you should try it, it will certainly expand your sewing ability - You have to think and figure out what to do.
