Sewing Machine Embroidery

cycler1729 | Posted in Machine Embroidery on

I’ve got an older sewing machine which has about a dozen different stitches which I believe are to be used for embroidery – in the manual there are some instructions on how to embroider but not how to use the specific stitches. Does anyone know a book or site which explains how to use these older simple stitches in designs?

Thanks!

More information please. What brand & model of machine are you asking about?

The internal stitches are usually referred to as decorative stitches.

With both embroidery and decorative stitches, stabilizer is needed to prevent puckering of the fabric.

      It's a Brother XL 2022.

I was just wondering if there is any specific information on how to use the decorative stitches to create an image (like a flower).

They only show in the manual that it is possible to use 3 of the stitches (all zig zag)for an alphabet but they don't really show how.

Yes, I know about using stabilizer under the fabric.

This book looks like a possibility:

Teach Yourself Machine Embroidery: Easy Decorative Stitching Using Any .... to do the decorative stitches on the cover on my beloved but very basic machine. ...http://www.amazon.com<!----><!---->

Try using a tear away stabilizer under your fabric. This prevents your fabric being pulled into the feed dogs and helps the stitches to form nicely. You can play around with stitch length and width. Use either polyester or rayon embroidery thread in the needles...adjust your tensions for this heavier thread. I like Sulky 40 wt. rayon. There is white or black bobbin thread that you can purchase or just try using a sewing thread in the bobbin that matches your material. Hope this answers your question. Mary

Ooops, now I see that isn't what you meant. The Bernina website has many ideas on how to use the decorative stitches on machines.

You might also be interested in threadpainting or freemotion quilting or machine embroidery without an embroidery machine? This is lots of fun, you can "draw" with your sewing mach. You drop the feed dogs or cover them so you control the motion either side to side or front to back.

That's not exactly what I was sort of asking but it's an idea - I don't own an embroidery or electronic machine but the one I've got has several design stitches and I wanted to know if there was a site that described how to use those stitches to create an image.

      Thanks!

I would contact the manufacturer. You can do this on line or through a shop which sells machines.
