Looking to buy a new machine

squirel | Posted in Machine Embroidery on

I am looking at beginning  machine to machine embroider. Took a beginner class today and I’m hooked. I used a Janome 350(I think). Any comments or recommendations. I also quilt and it was suggested to upgrade to a Janome 6600 and buy a separate embroidery machine so I can do both at the same time. Any comments or recommendations welcomed. THANKS

Try as many different brands as you can before making a decision.

Test the dealer as well as the machine, then purchase the machine you like best from the dealer you like best.

I totally agree with Spicegirl on this..Try many, take different fabrics with, and find a great dealer.

I own the 350e, and am very happy. I wanted a separate machine, as I make small quilts and sew garments. I will have more time next year to use it more.

A few members here have added great information. Please read 6612.1 , 7525.1 , 7393.7 , 7393.14 , 7393.15  , 7393.18 ...These are the most recent posts regarding Janome embroidery only machines, and embroidery software.

Enjoy, if you get stuck or have more questions, please ask, we are all here to help.

http://www.patternreview.com has many sewing, serger, and embroidery machine reviews

Sorry, PR has very few embroidery machine reviews.  They don't have a separate listing for EM and what is said is lost within the reviews of sewing machines.

I keep complaining, but they just don't get how popular this craft is.

The best forum I have found for discussion of home machine embroidery is Sewforum.com

        That's a great site!  Mary

I am with Spicegirl on this one.

I am now addicted to SewForum.... for everything machine emroidery, designs, copyright issues...you name it they got it.

It is a real shame patternreview has 'lost' the ME reviews. I use it for other help though, it is a great additition to my forum list.

Each brand of machine also has it's own software format (or language, to quote Nancy Zeiman).  However, there are software packages from other sources that may work just as well and cost less.  I suggest that you also research the different types of software.

Some embroidery machines connect to your computer, some use disks or cds, some use a reader/writer box, or design cards.  It's a matter of preferace and cost.

I wouldn't go by who has the prettiest or best designs though, because they are available in many formats from a zillion sources.

Oh, another good place to learn about machine embroidery is http://www.emblibrary.com and go to thier projects and teaching pages.  Kenny is very knowledgeable and you will learn alot.  Mary

You don't need a "top of the line machine" for excellent results so don't let anyone bully you into thinking you need all the bells and whistles.  My first embroidery machine still embroideries just as beautifully as the "top of the line" I got years later.  There will be a new "top of the line" every year or two.  Some dealers allow you to trade up later too.  The amounts they give you on the trade varies.
