embroidery software
I'm looking into getting embroidery software. My primary interest right now is editing existing designs but I'll probably want to get into digitizing at a later date. I have a Viking Designer SE but the Viking proprietary softare is way beyond my bank account. I'm considering Embird or SewWhat. Any ideas or suggestions?

Embird would be my first choice - although I haven't used SewWhat.
Embird does all the editing you might want to do and when you get to wanting to digitise, you just add the digitising module (called Studio).
There is lots of support, if you need it, on the internet and the price, compared to the machine specific programs, is magic!
I'm and Embird fan!!

Edited to add: you can download a copy of Embird for a trial period to see how you like it.

Correll DraWaings has a free sample to try out, as do many of the other programs, or maybe you could take a class on the one you want to buy before purchasing it to be sure it will interact well with your machine brand.
I got the Pfaff 4D for my Vikings and am thrilled with it. (Unfortunately the dealer went out of business so I am teaching myself when my attention span and temperament allows, lol) you can buy it in sections instead of the whole Suite at once. I've waited for 10 years to finally get into digitizing and the whole deal, but it was worth the wait. The online tutorials really helped~ For once, I feel like it was worth the price to buy software and am thrilled with it! (It was on sale).

PR is not that up on machine embroidery - http://www.sewforum.com has many, many more embroidery machine and software users. The site is sponsored by Allbrands, but there is no pressure to buy products from them
http://www/Annthegran.com is another site, but they keep hawking for you to buy from them...don't have to.
