Buying my wife a machine….NEED HELP

richie_rockwell | Posted in Machine Embroidery on

Good morning,

I was planning on buying my wife a macine for Christmas and thought it would be a relatively easy task…. Apparently I was wrong. Her mom has a bernina but I am not going to spend 5+ grand on the machine. She told me to look at the Baby Locks but there are still like 3 different models. Can anyone help out with what i should get? She will primarily use it to put our kids initials and names on clothes but will probably want to do things down the road that are a little more advanced (pictures designs etc). she will by no means be opening a company with this thing, i just need a good one that will give her the ability to do alot with it. She has a sewing machine so having one that does everything is not a must.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Time is of the essence though because, as most guys do, i have waited until the last minute !!

    Buying Sewing Machine For Wife

BabyLock is an excellent brand.  I have had a TOL (top of the line) Babylock for several years.  Mine is what is known as a combo (can be used for sewing as well as machine embroidery).

In addition, she will want the embroidery feature to have, at the least, a stitch area of 5 x 7 for the larger embroidery designs.

USB connectivity is another plus.  This can be cable (machine and computer have to be within the length of the cable) or removable stick/flash/thumb drive.

If she wants to create her own embroidery designs, that will entail the addition of software and a bit of a learning curve.  Unless digitizing software is included in the package (machine & software) wait a while.

What she will need is a catalog program (the computer's operating system does not recognize machine embroidery formats and cannot open the file) so she can actually view the downloads (designs free or purchased on the Internet).  For this I like Essentials Thumbnailer.

Bernina is way overpriced and so are Bernina accessories.

Do not make the purchase until she has test driven and made a selection.  Dealers do not do returns or exchanges unless it is for a more expensive model.

Best wishes for a happy Christmas.
