Bobbin Thread

user-226054 | Posted in Machine Embroidery on

I have a 2007 Viking Designer I with USB port. When the machine cuts the bobbin thread at the end of the project it is too short to be caught by the top thread. I have to open the bobbin cover and pull the thread out a few inches. This is annoying. Especially when I have already attached the next piece and have to remove the hoop to adjust the bobbin thread. Any suggestion out there?

My Designer SE does the same thing.........if I forget to 'fix' the problem prior to stitching, I hit the 'park' button and it moves the hoop back so you can access the bobbin.  Not great, but better than removing the hoop.  Also, its strange but it only seems to do this in the embroidery mode.........

    Hope this helps.

talk to your dealer, it shouldn't do that. You should be able to start the next bit of sewing without problem. Now, mine will do that some times in embroidery, but not when sewing

Thank you jjgg and Crazy K for your response. This does only happen in the embroidery mode. Seems to me, at the price of the machine this should not happen. Also, I can't use the thread pegs because when I sew, the thread will wind around the peg and break. If I set the thread cone on the table it gets knocked off. I Have to stop the machine and chase the tread cone, rewind the thread on it and continue my fun. Although, that is good exercise.

If you are using cone thread, try the thread nets that came with your machine.  I was fighting mine and then I relented and tried the net.........it helped a whole bunch........well worth the trouble.  I have found that cones should be in the horizontal position with the nets and the regular spools (I know there is a technical name for the way they're wound but it escapes me at the moment .......darned senior moments!) work better in the vertical.  I think the book that came with the machine has a section regarding this.  It seems that I do it backwards but hey.....it works!

Do some experimenting......you'll find something that works for you.  As for the cutting of the thread and the cost.......I fully agree.....but I still love my machines.

        Happy Stitching!

I to love my machine. I have looked at the features of other machines and I am grateful the dealer in my area sold Vikings. I consider myself lucky. It is very user friendly. Just the two problems. The thread is a bummer though. I did not think about using "park". I will try that.

You should have at least one free check-up for the machine.

Even new machines can be in need this.

Shipping and handling of sewing machines is not the same as when handling TNT (very carefully).

If you think of a waterfall when threading your Viking, it will not do this.  The crosswound embroidery threads like Sulky should be put on the horizontal spoolpin with the thread "falling" towards the front.  Be sure the presserfoot is up to release tensions when threading.  Make sure the  bobbin thread is threaded into the tension slot properly.  Change the needle if all else fails,  I rarely use a threadnet except for serging.  Hope this helps.  Mary

there are a couple of things you can do for cone thread, first, you should get a stand for it that sits behind the machine. You can pick up a cheap one at Joanns or hancocks. other than that, put a coffee mug behind the machine and put the cone in that - it wont' run away on you.

I hope you aren't using serger cone thread, it is too lightweight for regular sewing and embroidery!  I have one of those stands, the stem bends and it didn't come with a weight in it like some do so it tips.  The coffee cup works well.  Mary

No, I'm not using serger thread, lots of embroidery thread comes in cones. But, speaking of sergers, there are times when I need to match a particular color and I can't find serger thread in that color, so I will buy regular sewing thread (and for this I will use coats and clark thread - I'd never sew with it otherwise) I wind the thread from the spool onto 3 or 4 bobbins, then place those in coffee cups behind the serger - the bobbins won't fit onto the spool pins of the serger. Just another way of figuring out what works!

I use the bobb'n serge thing to hold the regular sewing thread for the serger.  One of my favorite things is to use Perle Crown Rayon in the loopers.  I also love it in the bobbin and sewing with the fabric right side down for decorative effects.

What thread do you like to use for the sewing machine basic sewing that comes on cones and where do you buy it?  This sounds like a money saving tip I should entertain.  Thanks, Mary

Oh, I see now that it was Coats and Clark, I use Metrosene, sorry.

I think this 'thread' got started about embroidery, I was refering to embroidery thread on cones that I use in my Designer 1. I just use metrosene thread for regular sewing. I'll buy guterman thread only if I need it for a particular color, but I think metrosene is the best thread out there.you can buy regular sewing thread on cones, try places like sewtrue.com, Greenberg and Hammer and banasch.Banasch is probably your best bet, they seem to have a great selection

Thanks for the websites.  What embroidery thread comes on cones?  I usually use Sulky.  I have the Designer 1 and the Rose for embroidery.  I bought the specialty bobbin case for the D1 for thicker threads as I don't wish to adjust the regular bobbin case.  I bought DigiBobbe embroidery designs from http://www.bonniemccaffery.com where you do the reverse technique I mentioned.  She has a free video online that explains how to do it with the hoop and designs or free motion.  It is beautiful and lots of fun.

            Mary,
I generally use Maderia embroidery thread, I buy the basic colors on the big cones - black, white, red... 5T's is a good source for the embroidery thread

I too bought that bobbin case, but have yet to use it!

I put the bobbin case inside a large ziplock bag to adjust it so I don't lose the tiny screw.  I love that it is a different color than the standard bobbincase too, just in case someone forgets to put it back in its' little box.  Mary

If you are talking about the plastic thread stand with one long stem that you can find on most notions walls, I bought one and found the same problem.  My husband when he has time is very handy.  Explained the problem to him and asked him to cut a small piece of wood and attach it to the bottom.  I beleive that it already had the holes for the screws.  Worked great.  Just make sure that if there is any chance that the piece of wood will close to your fabric that you sand off the rough edges.

My Designer 1 and Rose do not have this problem, it may need an adjustment at the shop.  Mary
