advice on purchase of embroidery machine

flowershouse | Posted in Machine Embroidery on

I would like to buy an embroidery only machine but do not know where to start.  I have a Bernina machine but it doesn”t do any embroidery stitches.  I do not  want to pay as much as the new fancy Bernina’s cost.  Any suggestion for another brand and model that is a little cheaper.  What specal things should I look for?  I did look at a Janome but know nothing about that brand, so I decided that I should look further.  Any suggetions would be greatly appreciated.

Make a list of what you want an EM to do for you.

    Start with budget.

A stitching area of at least 5 x7 - smaller will limit design availability.

USB connectivity - this is needed to download designs from the Internet via your PC to the machine.  Some machine come with cable to PC only and some have cable and USB stick.  The stick is a removable drive that you download to, then take to the EM.  You do not have to have your PC and EM sitting side by side to use a flash stick.

Memory card readers are still available, but the USB stick is the best way to go.

Auto-trim - a time saver - you do not have to maneuver the scissors and hoop to clip the jump stitches.

Start visiting dealers with your list and test their machines.

Come back to the forum if you have more questions, but I believe in buying the machine you like best from the dealer you like best.

    Hi.

I really like my Singer Xl-6000. It uses a memory card instead of a usb and it may not have all the latest technology but for the price its alot of fun. You can use either the PSW 2.0 software with it or you can use embird or buzztools to copy designs to the card. There are a couple of groups dedicated to this machine on yahoo groups which answer all the questions you need.. I have learned alot from the SewAmused group. It does not have the largest hoop but it does have three hoop sized with the largest being 9 X 5.5. It has an auto threader and auto bobbin winder (awesome). I still have not learned everything on this machine.. It has continuous hoop but it is not as big as the viking one...

I really have enjoyed this machine.
