Ways of matching fabric pattern

TwilaTee | Posted in General Sewing Info on

I am making a very large window shade. The window requires 2 panels of 58″ fabric. The fabric I am using has an embroidered pattern in it. What is the best way to sew the 2 panels together, making sure that the embroidery matches perfectly. I ironed one panel flat, and than pinned the other to it matching the patterns. Than I will baste it in place, open up the ironing, and than with my sewing machine, sew the two panels together. Is this the best way? or should I do something else. Stitch Witchery???
Thanks for all your help. You guys always have great ideas.

The way to get perfectly matched patterns is to lay both panels face up, turn under the seam allowance on one panel butt it up to the other and baste in place through the fold with a fell stitch. Then you can fold it over so right sides are together and sew the seam line.

Often, on fabric like this the pattern may not be exact, and with this method, you can fudge a bit here and there to line them up perfectly.

Ditto Heartfire2!  This is the way I match patterns and it really does work!

Here are some pictures of the finished shade. Keep in mind that it is not hung up yet. I just put it over my tv nook and snapped a front and back photo. I really like shades because they are so versatile depending on whether or not you add dowel sticks, you can have such different looks! .Thanks again for your help!

Wow! if the seam is where the center sewing line is, you did a fantastic job of matching.Home Dec stuff is the one area of sewing I have never gotten into. We are going to be moving in about 1 1/2 yrs when my husband retires, we already bought out retirement house in Asheville, NC. I suppose I will have to learn to do some shade/drapes because the house will need them, and I understand it's VERY expensive to have custom made ones. (and of course, I'm too cheap to pay that since 'I can do that'! (don't you that mentality? It gets me in trouble all the time! I go shopping for clothes because I don't have time to make for myself - I see the junk and poor construction and high prices in the stores and refuse to buy, so I go home empty handed!Anyway, enjoy your beautiful shades
