Using buttons that can’t be washed

Jonagold | Posted in General Sewing Info on

A friend gave me 5 beautiful amber and gold buttons from her trip to Chile.  They will be perfect on some dressy cotton suiting fabric.  Other than using a strip of ribbon behind the buttons or putting the buttons on a shank/flat button and treating them like cufflinks are there any other ways to remove the buttons so the buttons are not washed everytime?  I plan to make a two piece outfit and could possibly incorporate a design in the front closure.

The buttons will be the focal point.  They are narrow and oval on the ends with gold in the middle.  They are probably 1 1/4 inch long and would be placed up and down.

Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions.

    Hi,
I know they have safety pins that have a rise in them for buttons. Nancy's Notions has them, I believe. Marcy

where you want each button affixed  ( it has to be a shank button) make a small eyelet and punch through after sewing.  then you can buy small connectors that let you attach the button through the eyelet and only show on the inside of the garment. here is what they look like.

but i can't find where to purchase them because i don't know what they are  actually called.  sorry.

Are they shank buttons?  if so the pins work well, I think I got mine at Wal-mart.

If not shank style buttons, you might be able to tie something (ribbon, emb. floss etc) through the holes and then use the pins to catch that on the back of the button; sort of make your own shank.

Thank you for your ideas.  The buttons do have a shank.  My machine doesn't do eyelets but I could make a short buttonhole opening.  I have some metal holders (as pictured) from cards of buttons that I could use.  The metal holders might not feel so wonderful on one's skin but it will be fine, I'm certain.

I tried attaching buttons to a ribbon before.  When I sat down, the garment was tight enough to pull ribbon from another button, thereby causing the front to look really strange.  The garment probably was too tight but it wasn't a successful solution for that garment.

What I was referring to (pins) are small safety pins that are designed to poke through the cloth, go through the shank, then back through the cloth and close. No need for eyelets or holes in the garment.  They have a funny humped-back look about them.
