unlined brocade jacket

gackie | Posted in General Sewing Info on

I’m new to this but have been a long-time-subcriber to Threads.  I’m wanting to make an unlined brocade jacket with mandarin collar for my pre-teen grandaughter.  I don’t have a pattern yet and can’t find directions for either a reversible unlined jacket or for seam finishes for this kind of fabric.  Any ideas or resources that could help???

According to More Fabric Savvy by Sandra Bettzina, you should "...press your seams open and overlock each seperately.  Use a Hong Kong finish with lightweight silk as binding, or bind seperately with double fold bias tape".

    Your granddaughter is extremely lucky!

thanks...the lightweight silk Hong Kong finish is intriguing since the bulk of the brocade might give it the appearance of cording.  The jacket will probably always be worn "right side out" anyway.  Now, I need to find a pattern in the correct size or create one....

There is a vogue pattern #2729 that looks like an updated mandarin jacket.  http://www.voguepatterns.com
