Turning right sides out and getting neat pressed edges

paintchipgirl | Posted in General Sewing Info on

When I sew an item like a pillowcase or small bag or any item that requires you to sew all sides (right sides together while leaving a gap along one seam so you can turn the item right side out to press) I find it difficult to get my edges to press neatly.  The seam always ends up tucked inside tiny folds on either side of it.  I use a point presser to make my corners crisp, but the long edges are difficult.  I was wondering if anyone had a trick for this.

    turning seams

I've used 1. pressing the seam open before turning to right side  2. pressing the seam back on itself before turning to right side 3. after turning to right side, kind of rolling the seam between your fingers until you can actually see the seam, then press little by little to eliminate the fold you spoke of--probably my favorite but most time consuming and depends on the fabric.

      Thanks alotofstitches

I will try these first two.  I usually do #3 but have been only partially satisfied with results.  Maybe I'm too impatient.

Pillowcases (1st project) Do I need to finish the edges?

      Hi Alotofstitches:

I am glad you gave the tidbit about the seams, so one question down one to go..My first project has been pillowcases but I am not sure if my raw fabric edges need any other finishing touches.  I hope I am not confusing you, sorry.  Being a newbie to sewing I am not familiar with all the sewing jargons yet.  So basically all my materials have been 100% cotton which don't fray, so after sewing my border, and two sides: do I need to do anything with the raw edges of the fabric?
