support in bras for lingerie

Balencia | Posted in General Sewing Info on

Hi, anyone help? I am making a camisole with french knickers of a kind for my project (supposed to be for college but decided to do it without paying for college course so got prospectus and doing on own).  Does anyone know the best way of putting support in the bra part in order to keep the larger lady’s breasts up a bit – would it be ok to just add elasticated lining inside? but how is this done professionally? thanks for discussion. ta Lesley.

please clarify- are you asking about underwires (which are sold at most fabric stores here in the u.s.), or are you asking about using woven vs knits? in the 1950's, bullet bras were usually a strong cotton weave reinforced with lots of rows of stitching.

I love your term "bullet bra", I've always called them "rocket bras" (they remind me of the nose cone on a rocket)

One way to get support is to put a reinforced seam in the middle of the cup.  The only bra I ever made was a copy of a purchased one which had a three-piece cup.  The bottom of the cup had a seam in the middle and the top was sewn onto that with a seam straight across the center (horizontally).  I was much smaller then but was amazed by how much lift that one little seam gave.  Also, Bali makes a lycra bra without any wires for sizes up to 42.  Their trick is a fused in design on the underarm side of the cup which produces an amazing amount of support for such a subtle element.  Good luck.

One way to add support to any garment is to use boning. Go on some corset sites and you will see that even the cups can be boned for some more support. For this project I would use the plastic kind; it can be covered with ribbon or self-bias. Galey

Some of the camis have shelf bras in them, but they make your bust rather loaf-like - they do provide support, though, & firm up the bust area.  They are like the bras in swimsuits, with elastic that goes around the back with bra hooks.  Is that what you're looking for?
