stretch pattern to non stretch fabric

buttons74 | Posted in General Sewing Info on

Hello.

I would like to use a stretchy fabric sarong as a pattern to create a new swimsuit sarong. The orginal is one piece of lyrca fabric (unknown % of lyrca) with a napkin hem. My new fabric is 3 yards  (58 inches wide) of silky polyseter (non-stretch). Should I place the oringal on the bias of the new fabric? Or should I add inches all the away around to compensate for the non stetch?

    Making a sarong

    Good morning.

I don't think you need to cut the sarong on the bias. Most sarongs and pareos are simply long rectangles of fabric that are wrapped around the body, with some draping at the hip and waist. You'll want to make it larger than the stretch sarong you already have, however. I've read that an standard woven sarong is 45 inches wide by 66 inches long, but you can adjust if you're taller or shorter. There are many websites that explain different ways to wrap and tie a sarong. Have fun with your cover-up!
