straight seam binding

msewing1 | Posted in General Sewing Info on

Hi….I’m new here and I’ve only being sewing for approx. 2 years. I’m making a dress out of knit jersey and the pattern I purchased said that I would need “straight seam binding”. I’m unclear about what this is. Could anyone explain this to me? Thanks! TTYL

Where are you putting this seam binding?

I'm using Simplicity pattern #3678. It says the straight seam binding is to be used on the shoulder seams to prevent the seam from stretching. Thanks. = )

You can find packages of straight seam binding in any sewing store. You can use ribbon or tape as well, you only need about a foot or so, maybe you have something in your stash. You wouldn't use bias binding in this application as it wouldn't stop the shoulder from stretching.

You can find "straight" seam binding as opposed to "bias" seam binding on the rack where all the Wright trims are displayed.  (rick-rack, hem facing, bias tape, etc.)  I have found this comes in a few different widths.  For your purposes I think the 5/8" wide works well and you have enough width so you don't have to worry about sliding off the tape as you sew.  It resembles a narrow rayon ribbon.  I like to use a bit of it to make lingerie straps because it seems all the necklines on my clothes tend to slide and my straps are always showing if I don't put these in the garment.  I could describe how I do it, but it might make this post a bit lengthy.

Saw a tip for this once from Sandra Betzina: cut a strip of your fabric's selvage edge to use for this purpose. I've tried this and it works very well.

You can also find it under the name seam tape.  A lot of sewing articles have been talking about using the cut-off selveges from woven fabrics as seam tape in re-inforcing shoulder seams, and you can use a washable ribbon or twill tape to do the same job.

Thanks so much. This has definitely cleared up my problem. Thanks again. = )

I have also used twill tape to stabilize shoulder seams.

Just another note, whichever you decide to use, make sure you pre-shrink the tape using the same washing techniques you will use for the garment.
